'Their fearless physical execution and resonant vocal power rescue the pacing, turning abstract ritual into an empowering reclamation of a misunderstood historical archetype – reconnecting powerfully with Scotland’s dark legacy of historical witch trials and institutional misogyny.' ‘Thrice to thine, and thrice to mine. And thrice again, to make up nine.‘

Nine witches haunted the stage at the Tramway. Three trios of women, all dressed in rag and bone, starred in Thrice.

They hovered through the fog and filthy air as they danced in cyclical rhythms, reciting lines from Macbeth and using Shakespeare’s language to extend the Scottish Play.

This production is a poetic response to Macbeth – more of an interpretive dance performance.

But what appeared on stage was a pagan ritual the witches of Macbeth may have been forced to cast in order to maintain their prophetic magicks.

Thrice
Tramway, Glasgow

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Entering Tramway, it is the installation-like quality of the scenic design that immediately draws you in, establishing an atmosphere that is strikingly beautiful yet underpinned by a chilling, haunting air. Reimagining the aftermath of Macbeth, this physical theatre piece expands Shakespeare’s trio of “weird sisters” into a nine-strong female ensemble, shifting the focus from evil instigators to nine women reclaiming space after the fall of a tyrant.

The production’s visual architecture relies heavily on the power of three. The performance opens with three women entering the space, quickly followed by a second trio, and then a third—a deliberate multiplication that feels both hypnotic and imposing. Through Lina Limosani’s intricate choreography, the ensemble moves with remarkable fluid precision. They continually shift between unity and fragmentation, coming together as a singular body before pulling apart across the stage. This constant ebb and flow forms the visual heartbeat of the piece, underpinned by Guy Veale’s pulse-like sound design and Alberto Santos Bellido’s stark lighting.

It is in the final fifteen minutes that the production pushes its meditative qualities to their limit. As the movement settles into a repetitive loop, the experience shifts into something intensely ritualistic, raising a genuine critical question: who is this actually for? At times, the movement feels so inward-facing and sacred to the nine women on stage that the audience is left wondering whether they are being invited into a shared performance or simply watching a private act of catharsis.

Still, Thrice remains a powerful, atmospheric piece of work. Driven by sharp ensemble movement and a clear aesthetic vision, it offers a hauntingly beautiful meditation on grief, survival, and quiet authority.
