Wanted to share a (slightly out of sync🤪) clip of the world premiere of this really special collaboration and commission with First Nations legend William Barton.

William’s Yidaki playing and vocals are so iconically Australian and so inspiring. When it came to an Acknowledgement to Country (which became Spirit of Mother Country) to begin of concerts I wanted something that revolved around listening to Will’s insane ability to create, feel and improvise in the moment and respond in real time to him. That way every concert and rendition is evolving, unique, and based on our perspectives in that moment in time.

There is something other worldly and raw about the timbres of the high alto flute and Yidaki so we decided this would be a good match. It’s pushed me out of my comfort zone of following a pre planned idea of music, and to do it besides him is such a special (and intimidating) experience!

The piece starts and ends with improvised cadenzas off stage and conversations with a groove middle featuring string quartet. Sadly reels as they are favour 3 minutes or less so we can’t capture the full 10 minutes of it but hope you enjoy!

This will be on my album next year - and excitingly there will be a music minus one kind of vibe available for flautists to play along (a pre recording of William :)

A special thanks to @chromaquartet and @annadasilvachen for all your hard work on this piece!

Meet Alena Walentin, one of the judges for the 2026 Lyrical Flute International Championship.

Alena has won 26 awards and prizes, and has performed with 23 orchestras in nine countries, among them the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the Philharmonia and the BBC Scottish Symphony. She is an Altus Artist, Artistic Director of the international festival Soundscape MS, and former Vice-Chair of the British Flute Society. With her wind quintet Atéa she is a double prize winner at the International Carl Nielsen Chamber Music Competition, and she has held teaching positions at five conservatoires and a university across the UK, the Netherlands and Denmark. She is a keen advocate for women composers, whose music has long been underrepresented in the concert hall.

‼️ NEW FLUTE CONCERTO THIS WAY COMING — 2027! ‼️ 🪈🥹

We are thrilled to share the news that in February 2027, @harrysdraulig’s colossal new Flute Concerto will be entering the world!

I’m so happy to be performing the world premiere alongside the talented next generation of Australian musicians at @australianyouthorchestra. Excitingly this will be conducted by @umbertoclericiofficial, at these iconic venues:

📍 Sydney Opera House — 13 February
📍 Llewellyn Hall, Canberra — 14 February

After FIVE YEARS of cooking up this idea, Harry played me the concerto for the first time today, and IT’S MEGA! 😃🔥 I can’t wait for audiences to experience the piece and for it to take its place in the flute repertoire.

A huge thank you to AYO, Harry and Umberto for this opportunity and for contributing such an exciting new work to the flute repertoire and community. ❤️

Can a different flute bring out a new colour in your sound? 🤔

I tried the Altus A13PG and was struck by its bright, shiny sound. The flute features a 958 silver tube with platinum plating, 18K gold-plated keys, and an S-cut headjoint. @altus.flutes

It felt powerful and responsive, with a quick projection. I also felt I could put more air into it. Double tonguing took a little more effort than I’m used to, though the S-cut gave it a familiar starting point.

This was just a quick trial, so I’d need more time with the A13PG to get to know it properly…🤗

Have you tried this model? What did you notice?
