Since time immemorial, kingdoms have crowned and celebrated their monarchs, nations have decorated statesmen and military leaders, and societies have created enduring traditions to recognise people whose lives and work have shaped generations.

Politics has its state honours, entertainment its lifetime achievement awards, sport its halls of fame, and business and public service their own ways of recognising exceptional contribution. Across virtually every sphere of life, societies have found ways to acknowledge what people carry and their impact.

Yet within the Church, honour had increasingly become a difficult subject. In some quarters, the fear of elevating men had almost eclipsed the Biblical command to honour those whom God has entrusted with responsibility.

But honour does not diminish God or take anything away from Him. If anything, true honour magnifies God because it recognises His hand upon a person, acknowledges the grace He has given and celebrates what He has chosen to accomplish through a vessel. No wonder Romans 13:7 calls us to give “honour to whom honour is due,” while 1 Timothy 5:17 speaks of those who lead well as being worthy of double honour.

It was within this context that Honour Day emerged in 2017 around the ministry of Prophet Elvis Mbonye. Since then, it has become a defining annual occasion. Thousands gather to celebrate, worship and give thanks to God for the ministry of the prophet.
