Life has been so full to the brim lately (🙏🏽), that we haven’t had a chance to recap the magic that we experienced recently at the 7th Annual Angel City Sports Awards Gala! ✨

What an incredible night celebrating athletes, advocates and an amazing community of people who continue to break barriers and redefine what’s possible through adaptive sports.

As parents of a child with multiple disabilities, we know firsthand just how meaningful access, inclusion and opportunity can be. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by people who don’t just talk about making the world more inclusive, but are actively doing the work to make it happen!

A very special thank you to:
Alexis, Miles, Ari and the entire Frech family for including us in such a memorable evening. We are incredibly grateful for your friendship, generosity and unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for athletes of ALL abilities.

We left feeling inspired, grateful and reminded of just how powerful a community can be when people come together with a shared purpose.

Here’s to continuing to raise the bar for inclusion and opportunity! 🦾🦿

We had a GREAT day at our JUNIOR adaptive golf clinic, growing the game with youngsters, showing them how to believe in themselves and do something cool outside. We had a lot of fun and a lot of kids trying golf for the first time. ❤️💪

I couldn't do this without the support of Westchester Golf Course @westchestergcla and Angel City Sports @angelcitysports

Before the clinic Alvin was demonstrating some shots from the wheelchair and I'm so happy we got Alvin @alvin_malave out on the golf course with Rich @walkingrich and Brett @livefeedback after the clinic as a nice little dessert to the end of a wonderful time.

Thank you and we can't wait for the next one!

I was very happy to be invited by @nwba to attend an event at Birmingham High School (formerly a hospital), commemorating the 80th anniversary of the first wheelchair basketball game. That’s so crazy to me that it all started so close to where I live?! The @mayorofla presented a plaque and a sign that will go up at the intersection of victory and balboa blvd (which also happens to be near the sepulveda dam, a key site for the 2028 Paralympic games!). Members of the committee working on the LA Paralympics were in attendance and spoke, as well as paralympians like @steveserio11 and @jorgeesalazar25. I also hung out with by @angelcitysports teammates! The exhibition game at the end was fun to watch; I wish the mayor had stayed to watch, and it would have been fun to see her try a bball chair 😆. @la28 @lacdod #disability #wheelchairbasketball #adaptive sports #la

The very first game of Wheelchair Basketball was played in the county I was born in, Los Angeles. Very thankful to @nwba and coaches for sending out the invite to the celebration of wheelchair basketball, showcasing the gym where the very first game of wheelchair basketball was ever played and the amazing opportunity given to other para-athletes and myself to play an exhibition game in the new gym. I became emotional when the speakers spoke, amazed that my Father arranged that I would be here on this celebrating with everyone who was there before it happened.

What an honor. I’m so thankful.

And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
Joel 2:25KJV

I took a moment to reflect over my life, and I’ve noticed that this Scripture is coming to pass. I became an amputee when I was 9 1/2 months old. I had to have chest tube, internal jugular line, and other things. I had a blood glucose level of 1,100 mgs/dl (normal is 80-110), a blood clot, and the medicine used to try to dissolve the blood clot stopped my heart on the way back to my hospital crib in Peds. ICU where I had to be resuscitated. I went into a coma for 3 1/2 hours and when I woke up, the only option to save my life was to have my right leg amputated above the knee.

For years, I had a hard time accepting my amputation; I grieved the leg I don’t remember having or using. There were dark, sad moments, and difficulty growing up without it, but if it wasn’t for my Father, The Most High being right there helping me through in the way that He did, I’m not sure where I’d be. I finally accepted my amputation in steps a few years after attending university. My good friend who is like my sister told me I needed to go out there and be within my community, the community I avoided prior.

Some awesome things happened during that time, and then thanks to @angelcitysports, wheelchair basketball came into the picture. I’m only 1 year and a half in as an official wheelchair basketball player (12/10/2024), and already so much that I could not have imagined would take place. I’ve met and played with Paralympic Gold Medalists, been to many wheelchair basketball events, and much more. The years I felt I wasted grieving over my leg and avoiding my community are being restored; everything happens for a reason. Shoutout to @mikayla_l_photography the awesome pictures, and @venicepaparazzi! What a day with the @nike team! 💙🏀

As part of our partnership on the road to LA28, we hosted @nike DEI and SCI teams for a wheelchair basketball clinic at @crenshawymca - and they didn’t just watch, they jumped all the way in!

From unloading the van and assembling chairs to scrimmaging on the court, the Nike team got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to put on an adaptive sports event. And they brought the energy! 🔥

Thank you to everyone who came out, got in the chairs, and experienced what our community is all about. Thank you to @crenshawymca for hosting us and being a partner in bringing adaptive sports access to the community.

This is what it’s all about - building community, and making sure adaptive sports reach every corner of LA and beyond..We’re so grateful for partners like Nike who are committed to supporting the movement and helping us expand access and visibility.

This is just the beginning 💙 Excited to keep building together on the road to LA28!
