I was on a hop on-hop off bus tour of Cape Town the day before. The weather prediction was accurate and it started pouring heavily around noon. I tried to be adventurous in my sightseeing shenanigans, but couldn't keep up with the ultra chilly winds. Ended up getting drenched & had no choice but to skip some of the great stops & head back. It was still a fun outing & I was really looking forward to my 'Mission Penguins Beach', the one thing I had on my "non-negotiable things to do in Cape Town" list. My hosts @karintanchel & @alwynpetersen , the sweethearts they are, were taking me to the beach & we planned to make a day of it. But, I woke up to the sounds of a downpour & got so upset I could cry. Karin came up to me, gave me a big hug, and said- "Don't worry, love. We ARE going to the beach today. You'll wear the raincoat I gave you, and we will see the Penguins after we have some amazing fish & chips. Now stop being so grumpy. Give us a smile & go get ready." And Alwyn was like- "We are obviously going, Rubina. Come see, the sun is already coming out!" In that moment, I realized that you can turn most situations around if you have the right attitude. As a chronically pessimistic human, their effortless positivity was alien and thus, inexplicably comforting. I think my exact thought was- sometimes, being hopeful is the easiest thing to do. This picture is from that gorgeous spring morning somewhere south of the equator- we had delicious fish & chips, followed by the absolute highlight of my trip- seeing THE PENGUINS (they deserve a separate post), and had the most scenic drive back. I miss Cape Town, and I miss being pampered silly by these adorable people I lived with for a week. 🧡 🗓️: September 29th, 2024 📍: Penguin Colony | Boulders Beach 📷: Karin
