For 6 years, I have had “Jaani Door Gaye” by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan playing in my head on repeat almost every day. The lyrics roughly translate to: The fire of separation burns in my chest Days and months have passed since we parted. Separated such that they haven’t come back Haven’t come back, my beloved has gone far. Although the initial context of this song describes the spiritual connection between a devotee and the divine, this song played the minute I began my 2 hour drive home after I first met Alysha. And I kept coming back to this song during these 6 years through the pandemic when she moved from DC to Arkansas and I was in Hershey, then when she moved to NYC, then when I moved to Chicago, then when I moved to Philly. Only reconnecting for a day or two only to have the flames of separation burn me again when we were apart for the weeks and months to come between visits. Now those burns have been calmed by the balm that is our new life together. After 6 years I finally was able to propose to the love of my life and moved in together. I no longer need to sing this song to ease my pain. Mera arooh mera paas hai. Happy Birthday Alysha. One of many to come when we can finally be together rather than celebrating on FaceTime.
