This look is based on my s/s 27 collection Virgen De Chun Hua 春花, Which roughly translates to “lady of the spring flower.” Combining Spanish and Chinese language, this collection explores the relationship between traveler, local, and the experiences she recounts from her times abroad.

The bustier is constructed of a vintage silk brocade tapestry purchased from eBay. Which I have identified as using the Yue silk embroidering techniques, originating from the Guangdong province, it is characterized by its dense, vibrant stitches. The bustier is fully lined in Silk shantung and secured with hook and eye closures on the side seam.
The skirt is a sheer draped slip skirt featuring a bound invisible zipper and French seams. The fabric depicts large scale gold rose velvet burnout.

• Introducing my Senior BFA Thesis Collection~ SCTR ~ [pronounced sector] • SCTR stands for Showcasing Culture through Reaffirmation

In March of last year I submitted a proposal to enter into the BFA degree program and I had no idea this collection would grow into this beauty a year later. My initial thesis question completely changed from the initial since I was learning and researching more throughout this rigorous process. This fashion collection answers the thesis question:

How can we recognize the interconnected experiences of being black and being a woman— specifically addressing how femininity is taught from adolescence— and how plus size black women are often seen as failing to “perform” it by societal standards?
