For the past three years, KIBRI has proudly produced San Francisco’s annual Arts & Heritage Celebration at City Hall, creating a platform where art, culture, history, and community come together.

What began under Mayor London Breed by recognizing outstanding Eritrean Americans through Certificates of Honor has grown into a citywide celebration of culture and artistic exchange. This year, thanks to Mayor Daniel Lurie, Arts Commission President Chuck Collins, the San Francisco Protocol Office, our sponsors, volunteers, and community partners, we celebrated in our largest venue yet, honoring the many contributions of Eritrean Americans to the Bay Area.

To those of us who were born or raised in the diaspora, we carry a unique responsibility. Every time we step into spaces where our communities have been underrepresented, we open doors for others. Simply by showing what is possible, we inspire future generations across the diaspora.

This year, we honored the legacy of Esayas Gebremedhin.

Esayas dedicated 15 years of his life and his personal resources to research the connection of Tigrinya and the hieroglyphs. His work inspired millions to ask new questions and challenge old narratives.

Working for something greater than yourself is rarely easy. It often comes with sacrifice, criticism, misunderstanding, and sometimes even opposition—including from those who ultimately benefit the most from your work. Yet those challenges cannot define us or stop us.

We will continue to trailblaze.

We will continue to uplift.

We will continue to organize.

Esayas’ life ended far too soon, but his legacy lives on through the conversations he started, the millions he inspired, and the generations that will continue asking questions because he dared to ask them first.

OAKLAND — Sunday, May 17 at 3 PM

At a time when Black culture was at its height, vibrant, expressive, and deeply rooted, Wattstax captured that essence.

Held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1972, this historic concert brought together over 100,000 people to mark the 7th anniversary of the Watts Rebellion.

Featuring artists from Stax Records like Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, The Bar-Kays, and more , the music was only part of the story.

Woven throughout the film are reflections on Black life, identity, and survival… alongside commentary from Richard Pryor that still resonates today.

This is more than a concert film.
This is a historical document of unity, creativity, and organization.

Join us at The New Parkway for a special screening. Malcolm X Jazz Festival weekend. Ticket link in bio.
