This is the longest video we’ve ever shared! Please watch and share your thoughts for healthy discussion.

We went down a long and dark rabbit hole of subreddit where our hearts just broke for families.

There’s a clear need. We were experiencing the loneliness and depression when we started OSM. But we hope to help families find ways to reconnect rather than get to the point and say “I’m over this. I’m out!”

Society celebrates those who “succeed” - but we rarely acknowledge those who make it possible.

Food for thought.

❗️Tag your partner/spouse or whoever has been your rock throughout your medical journey. That acknowledgement means more than you’ll ever know.

There are parts of MedLife that sound almost absurd when you explain them to someone outside medicine.

Yes, we celebrated major holiday on non-holidays…sometimes weeks earlier or later!

Yes, I went to the event alone.
Yes, the schedule changed again.
Yes, we moved for the job.
Yes, I’m proud of what my spouse does.
Yes, sometimes I resent what it asks of our family.
Both can be true.

That’s why finding community in MedLife feels different.

It isn’t necessarily about finding people whose lives look exactly like yours.

It’s finding people who understand the contradictions.

People who know you can love the physician and hate the schedule.

Be fiercely independent and tired of carrying so much.

Feel enormously proud and occasionally wonder where you disappeared in all of it.

Maybe that is the real value of connection.

Not having someone fix MedLife.

Just finally being somewhere you don’t have to explain it.

Physician families are different.

Not better.
Not worse.

But life attached to medicine comes with realities most families never have to consider:

Training.
Call.
Relocation.
Unpredictability.
Missed milestones.
Career tradeoffs.
Burnout that doesn’t necessarily stay at work.

And sometimes the simple feeling that everyone else seems to be living by a rulebook you never received.

That’s why @amaalliance President, Dinah Goldenberg’s words matter.

The AMA Alliance exists specifically within this world:

Educate. Advocate. Connect.

You do NOT have to love politics to be an advocate for physician families and medicine.

“I’m not an attorney.”
“I’m not a policy expert.”
“I don’t understand all of this.”

Jenny Shepherd thought all of those things too.

She calls herself an “accidental advocate.”

And that may be exactly why her message matters.

Advocacy does not have to begin in Washington.

It can begin with something far simpler:
You know how medicine affects your spouse.

You know how healthcare affects your family.

You know what happens when administrative burden, access problems, workforce shortages, burnout, or bad policy leaves the hospital and walks through your front door.

That lived experience has value.

Physician families need support too.

So where exactly are they supposed to find it?

Some physician families have known about the AMA Alliance for decades.

Others have never heard of it.

And that gap matters.

Because physician families are dealing with the long hours, training years, moves, missed holidays, unpredictable schedules, career sacrifices, solo parenting, burnout spillover—and all the other things that come with MedLife—whether or not they know there’s a larger community out there that understands it.
