As uncertainty continues across the Gulf, what does it mean for the people who have built their lives there?

In this episode, I speak with Mohammed Amaan Siddiqui, Non-Resident Fellow at the Gulf Labour Markets, Migration and Population (GLMM) Programme, about why some migrants chose to stay while others left, and what the ongoing conflict reveals about migration in the GCC.

Here is this week’s segment of RA in Spotlight!

This is Amaan! Despite being nationally and ethnically Indian, Amaan’s community is the South Asian demographic as a whole as he felt like he could relate to South Asian people generally. An interesting aspect of his interviews was that although his interviewees all shared similar ethnicities, there was a diverse range of reasons as to why people decided to come to the UAE. Nonetheless, he felt this insight could be extended to other ethnic backgrounds and rather the parallels that he had could draw between class, socio-political and economic standing was more impactful in understanding South Asian peoples motivations.
Amaan also asked about motives for migration in general, pertaining to his own personal research, and he found that the most common reason for choosing the UAE over other countries was due to the fact that many of these people already had established ties and networks to communities here.
When thinking about the first place that comes to mind when picturing his community in the UAE, Amaan mentioned Majaz. He spends a lot of time in Majaz and although it is not predominantly South Asian, with a wide array of mixed backgrounds residing in the area, he felt that his connection to his community was not primarily ethnic and rather had to do with personal things and the way that the community life is.
