Walking the dog. 🐕 Picking up after your pet. 💩 These everyday tasks might seem simple, but for someone recovering from a stroke, they can present real challenges.

That’s where occupational therapy comes in! 🦊

After a stroke impacted his hand function and mobility, this FOX patient has a meaningful goal: getting back to caring for his dog safely and independently. 🐾

Through creative, functional activities, his occupational therapy team is helping him practice:

🐾 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 while bending and reaching to pick up after his dog.

🐾 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 needed to manage a leash and waste bags.

🐾 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 by simulating the pulling and unpredictable movements of a dog on a leash.

Before introducing this simulation, Amanda Cable, OTD, OTR/L worked with her patient on foundational skills through smaller, progressive interventions. After assessing his abilities and readiness, she determined he was prepared for this next step in his therapy.

These activities are performed in a controlled, supervised environment and tailored to the patient’s individual abilities and goals. This video offers just a small glimpse into his individualized plan of care, with his occupational therapy team continuing to assess his readiness to safely return to these activities in everyday life.

Occupational therapy isn’t just about exercises. It’s about helping people return to the everyday activities that give their lives meaning, purpose, and independence.

And sometimes, that means getting a little creative to simulate real-life challenges and help patients build the skills and confidence to safely return to the activities they love! 🧡
