In case your mama never told you… every woman needs a hostess gift drawer. 🎀

One of my favorite little hosting tips is to keep a drawer stocked with beautiful, thoughtful gifts. Whenever I come across something unique while shopping, I pick up an extra and tuck it away for the next dinner party, girls’ night, or last-minute invitation.

My latest find? This gorgeous mahjong playing card set! The beautiful grandmillennial artwork makes it just as pretty displayed on a coffee table as it is wrapped up for a friend. It’s exactly the kind of special little find I love keeping on hand.

Because showing up with something thoughtful never goes out of style. 🤍

Comment GIFt and I will send you all the details on this gorgeous card set! 🎁

Pull up a chair, we have news. 🀄

We are honored to share that Amanda Norman (@amandanormanstudio ) and our American Mahjong Playing Cards are a 2026 TAGIE Awards finalist for Most Innovative Designer of the Year, Art & Visuals.

Finalists are selected by industry experts, but the winner is chosen by popular vote. We’re a small, independent game company sitting at a table with some of the biggest names in toys, so every single vote truly counts.

💌 Comment VOTE and we’ll send the voting link straight to your DMs (or tap the link in our bio).
Once you’re there, find Most Innovative Designer of the Year, Art & Visuals, and choose Amanda Norman, Mahjong Playing Cards. It’s one vote per person, and voting closes at midnight on Thursday, October 22. (You can vote from multiple devices 😉)

Every card in this set began with Amanda’s own brush in her own hand. Seeing that artistry recognized, in a game with such a long and beautiful history, means more to us than we can say.

We also could not have brought this to life without the vision of @penandmug, who took every idea swirling around in our heads and put it into a beautiful box. 🤍

And because every mahjong table has four seats: once you’ve voted, send this to your three. 🤍

She’s here. ✨Introducing our Mahjong Playing Cards, the first release in the Hootenanny Artist Collection. Featuring original artwork by Amanda Norman, whose work you may recognize from House Beautiful, Traditional Home, and Architectural Digest, these cards bring stunning art to life at your table.

Comment MAHJONG, and we will send the link straight to your DMs.

Mahjong has been bringing people to the table for generations through joyful, community driven tradition. Coupled with Amanda’s art for a keepsake, these cards are a timeless addition to your collection.

🀄 160 cards and two pearlescent dice, with all suits, winds, dragons, flowers, jokers, and blanks
🀄 Compact and travel friendly, no heavy tiles to pack
🀄 Magnetic closure box, made to be gifted and to be displayed as the art that it is
🀄 Plays the same as tiles, with your favorite rules card, just in an easy travel form

In a world where so much art is generated in seconds by a machine, every card in this set started with a real brush in a real hand. That felt worth doing as a meaningful way to bring beauty to your tabletop.

Whether it is your next hostess gift, your travel companion, or the newest addition to your own game night table, we hope you love them.

Mahjong maxxing (noun): The art of “optimizing” your mahjong setup. (Full definition/context below.)

Big thanks to @playhootenanny for sending me these @amandanormanstudio Mahjong playing cards. I’ve been super curious about playing mahjong with cards, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it!

I’m also a sucker for anything that showcases human artistry. Being able to play with real artwork in the age of AI-slop is always a breath of fresh air. So, I wanted to put together another mahjong maxxing setup for these beautiful playing cards. Really channeled fall vibes on the water with this one (as I’m craving the sweater weather ahead).

Mahjong playing cards from @playhootenanny
Golden Gingham Mahjong mat from @sunday_mahjong
Glassware from @estellecoloredglass
Tablecloth and napkins from @serenaandlily
And for snacks, I’d do grilled cheese finger sandwiches with tomato bisque (in the Estelle rocks glasses for dipping)

Full definition/context: “Maxxing,” derived from the term “maximize,” is a trend that’s all about fully embracing or optimizing something in your life. Whether it’s sleep maxxing, joy maxxing, or in my case, mahj maxxing, the idea is simple: if you’re going to do it, do it well.
