So yesterday I had the opportunity to participate in an artist talk at the @bowdoinmuseum along with @amina.sillah and @amanihitelive to share our artistic practices and discuss our collaborative @blackladyag. Being a black woman artist, participating in an artist talk at my alma mater, alongside and exhibition highlighting black women in art was an experience that I will never forget. My life changed in summer 2016. What we thought to be an ear infection turned out to be Viral Meningitis and Shingles. Part of my brain was swelling, my ear was swollen and the right side of my face would be paralyzed for 9 months. I'd get crazy headaches so bad I'd miss classes. I couldn't smile completely. I couldn't taste on the right side of my mouth. I couldn't blink my right eye. I used to carry a box of eyedrops around and had to tape my eye shut to go to sleep. I've been growing my hair out ever since my illness. (shout out to the women who help me maintain!🙌🏽) I copped a gold casio that fall to match w/ some of my closest friends, the same friends who helped move my stuff into storage when I couldn't fly to Maine after learning I had to take a semester off. Shout out to my dumboiz! In that time away from @bowdoincollege I took a Digital Media class @sanjosestateuniversity and learned to use @adobecreativecloud. These skills would help me at my internships with @paloaltoartcenter, @_shethepeople, and lead to the founding of @avantgarbmag w/ @txhailstorm. I even started on my #VisionsofHomeEPA #EastPaloAlto documentary project with the support of @eastsidealums I also learned to use my creativity to support myself and my family. I made bread taking on photoshoots that my super hero @kash_koncepts was too busy to get to. I picked up my mom from work, bought groceries for the house, and got to help my lil bro @devantethekidd w/ his homework after school. We bootleged @rickandmorty every night that summer. #RIPMichaelMendel Getting sick was fasho a blessing. I went from studying Neuroscience and Chemistry to studying Visual Arts. The last slide is a video of my first professional shoot w/ @bayareaheadwraps. (shout out to @strawhatkilik for the connect) Now I'm in the Czech Republic studying Art and Social Change. Crazy how life works and I'm thankful for every moment of it and all the people I've met on the journey this far. I'm excited for what's now and what's next.
