Happy International Women in Engineering Day!! (SF Photo dumpy)👉💕 Shout-out to all you amazing women👩‍💻 You inspire me everyday!

Here’s a photo dumpy from the last 2 days at SF’s Tech Summjt where I met some incredible people, had lunch today with women in tech from @ted & @madeline.m.zhang took me to an awesome women in engineering event last night so I am feeling very blessed to have met so many cool women in tech (even just in the last few days lol) 🙌

It took me a long time to feel comfortable being feminine, or just being myself in the tech world... I hope that if anyone reading this feels like that, you know that you can reach out to any woman in tech and we will support you. You can be feminine in tech. In fact, you can be whatever you want! 😊

It's so lovely to see so many women supporting each other IRL and online 🥰 and generally EVERYONE supporting each other 🙌

I'm so grateful for all the amazing women I've met through this community, and ofc I'm so thankful for ALL of you 💖

Have a great week friends! 🥳

#InternationalDayOfTheGirl 👩🏼‍🚀

October 11 is International Day of the Girl, as declared by the United Nations. It’s a day to call attention to the challenges that girls face and promote equity, empowerment, and human rights fulfillment for girls around the world.

This year, the UN is asking the world to address the digital issues that girls face. Not only are girls around the world less likely than boys to have access to internet especially in underdeveloped nations, but they are also less likely to be empowered to gain technical skills and go into tech-related fields, i.e. science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Of course this year’s topic is incredibly important to me, and it aligns very well to the #worldspaceweek theme from last week - #womeninspace.

So, here are 3 ways to empower young girls interested in STEM:

1. Show them women in STEM. Social media is a phenomenal tool for this. It’s all about representation - if a young girl sees other women in tech fields, she is far more likely to foster her own interest in tech. Check out my latest reel for 15 women in space to follow, but I’m also tagging more women in tech on this post to follow too!

2. Expose them to hands on STEM. Subscription boxes like @melscience are a great way to get them hands on experience at home. But camps, after school programs, and field trips are other great methods.

3. Show them different types of STEM careers, more than just the traditional lab, computer, etc roles. There is a wide variety of careers in STEM, and definitely something for everyone!

What other ways can you think of to encourage young girls interested in STEM? Drop them in the comments!
