As a formidable commander and statesman, he consolidated the hill principalities, restored order across turbulent regions, and under his vision and strategic leadership, extended the state’s frontiers to Kishtwar, Ladakh, Baltistan, and western Tibet.

Deepest respect to the lion of battle, conqueror par excellence, and grand founder on his birth anniversary.

22 October 1947 — The Order That Changed the History of Jammu & Kashmir 🇮🇳

When Pakistani tribal raiders invaded Jammu & Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh ordered his Chief of Staff, Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamwal, to defend the state until Indian troops arrived.

With a small force of Dogra soldiers, Brigadier Rajinder Singh fought against a much larger invading force, destroying bridges and holding defensive positions to delay their advance towards Srinagar.

His men’s resistance bought nearly four crucial days, allowing vital political and military decisions to be made and Indian troops to be airlifted to Srinagar on 27 October 1947.

Brigadier Rajinder Singh made the supreme sacrifice during the fighting. For his extraordinary gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, becoming its first recipient.

He is remembered as the Saviour of Kashmir—a symbol of courage, duty and sacrifice.

“Save J&K State till the last man and the last bullet.”
