Summer Project has always been so important to me. Many moons ago, I spent five years in the cast, and then another five on the production team when I got “too old” to be in them. The lessons I learnt during that time have stayed with me forever - chiefly, you can achieve anything in the time you have!
Watching our sixty-five 8-19 year olds embrace the challenge of putting on a full scale musical in just eight days has been so inspiring. Their desire to push themselves together with their full on commitment elevated the show onto another level. Their joy and passion was so heartwarming, and the sense of teamwork was like nothing else.
We achieved this brilliantly special production thanks to the kindness, generosity and a lot of goodwill from a number of people - all of whom I am so thankful for. It had all the hallmarks of a classic old-school SYP in the best sense, taking it right back to the roots & where it began. The fact that we had representatives from every single generation of project across the creative team is amazing - and testament to how much it meant to all of us, both back then and in the present. I love all these people dearly, and I love this company - and I am in awe of these genuinely lovely young people, who are such a pleasure to be around. To be at the helm of SYP was always on my bucket list, but I thought that ship had sailed about 12 years ago. For it to happen with this superb collection of creatives around me, and with this particular group of young people is really really special.I’m so proud of what we achieved. I’m so proud of each and every one of our hugely talented young people. And I am REALLY proud that we took the opportunity to continue the legacy of 39 years of SYP for this amazing generation who deserve nothing but the best. That shy, quiet 14 year old who rocked up to audition back in the mid 90s, not knowing a single soul, would never have dreamt any of this possible. But what a magical magical thing to happen. Went down a rabbit hole for a 50th birthday “project” and have spent the last two hours uncovering some beuts from the 1990’s….some incredible nights out and many many memories….. I do hope my kids generation can sometimes collect hard copies of stuff - it’s worth it (also found my poll tax card, my baga gym certificates and my 1991 school report but no one needs to see those #1990’s #hacienda #boysown #flyingrecords
