Please welcome our participants for Box of Tricks 2026! 🎉 Expanding the idea of what plays can be and who gets to write them, Box of Tricks is a paid professional development opportunity. It gives artists with an established practice in making or giving live performances for an audience in any artistic discipline a chance to get to grips with some of the tools of writing for theatre so that they can build whatever kind of play they want. Kindly supported by the O’Neill Family, the Abbey Theatre’s Playwright Development Patron, we would like to welcome Amber Deasy, Aoife Sweeney-O’Connor, Colm McCready, David Ferreira-Alves, Emily Bradley, Holly Hughes, Joshua MacNuadhat, Kane O’Connell O’Flynn, Leah Rogers, Liadán Roche, Niamh O’Farrell-Tyler and Tori Kay to the Abbey Theatre👏 Congratulations all! #AbbeyTheatre #IrishTheatre #BoxOfTricks

Happy 13th Anniversary to Strive Theatre! Today, October 24th, is the 13th Anniversary of the founding of Strive Theatre by Andy Weston and Ciarán MacArtain. While 13 may have been an unlucky number for the Babylonians, for this little theatre company it has been full of gifts and blessings! This time last year we were gearing up for our work-in-progress sharing of Goll at Obhéal’s Winter Warmer Festival with a week-long residency at The Everyman Theatre. The sharing was a really valuable experience and the warm feedback we received brought us closer to realising our ambitions for the project. Early in 2025 we received a submission from Carina McNally of her play The Crow’s Old Gold. What a true gift this has turned out to be. The welcome received from the community in Allihies and Lehanmore during the rehearsal and production process in May is something that will always stay with us, and has established a deep connection between us and that part of the world. In the meantime other gifts were coming our way… Nicki French Davis of Civic Trust House approached us about getting involved in Voices from Popes Quay. A fascinating journey which culminated in a launch last Wednesday. The remit was to write, develop and direct a series of monologues based on historical characters connected to the house following a period of research led by Victoria Kingston and supported by Nicki. These past few weeks have seen us turn our attention back to Goll, which we are looking forwarded to premiering in The Briery Gap in February. For the opportunities that have come our way this past year we have many people and organisations to thank. Firstly to the bodies that have funded and supported these projects, The Arts Council, The Everyman Theatre, Obhéal, Cork County Council, Creative Places: West Cork Islands, The Heritage Council and each venue and festival. To the audiences that have come out to engage with the work. To the artists who have made the work. It is really humbling to see your dedication and talent to bring these projects to fruition. You are a credit to yourselves. A special word for Carina McNally, you have brought so much joy into our lives this year.

The launch of Voices from Popes Quay is happening this evening at 5.30pm! This is a special occasion for us and marks the climax of what has been a remarkable journey, delving into the local history of Popes Quay and Civic Trust House. It has been a real honour to represent this range of characters who have been part of the fabric of the history of the house and area over the past 300 years, a process that has involved a lot of discovery and taught us so much. It's been a new departure for us as a company working in audio theatre and has deepened our connection to our base of operations and our local heritage. A huge thank you to each actor who have given so much of themselves in animating these characters, bringing their voices from the obscurity of history into the public consciousness in 2025. We would also like to thank in particular, Nicki French Davis for her tireless efforts, Victoria Kingston for her diligent research, to Benjamin Burns as Sound Designer and all those who have contributed to the process on their own initiative to help uncover more and more of the rich detail that makes up the history of the house. A huge thanks also goes to The Heritage Council for their support. Looking forward to hearing the monologues aired across the quay, following the launch by Conall Creedon. Hope to see you there! Mile buíochas. ST

The journey so far…🌊 From 2021, consisting of weeks and months writing. On to developing text with creatives in the room later that year. To 2022, where we showed a work-in-progress thanks to @corkmidsummer with the beautiful sculpture by Lisa Zigone. To 2024, back in development with fresh eyes. Leading to 2025, the re-writing and producing what you’ll see @corkartstheatre Thanks @darraghkanephotography for documenting the last two iterations. 🗓️Oct 21st - 25th 🎟️ Tickets at the link in my Bio The Father Myth New Writing | Theatre Production | Premier “Weaving the rawness of contemporary Ireland with the myth of Cú Chulainn and his son Connla, The Father Myth asks: do we have to become the men we grew up around?
