On the last day of his trip in Taiwan, Sebastian Gaskin felt bittersweet—melancholy at leaving so soon, and inspired by the teachers, music artists, and communities he’s met. At the National Museum of Prehistory, Ipo Demaladas and his daughter led us through the important milestones alongside the ongoing impacts of the Indigenous peoples of the island nation. Amber Still, Executive Director of Canada’s Polaris Music Prize, gave a presentation on how Indigenous music artists in Canada are redefining sound within the industry. Sebastian Gaskin also performed alongside Pinuyumayan music artists Hao-en and Morikilr—where music from both sides of the Pacific resonate together in one place. We had dinner at Kasavakan Village, where Alikay shared the inspiration behind the Kasavakan Deer Youth Hub—a space where the village youth can grow their dreams like they used to raise deer. Each song shared, each story exchanged, we see how the Pinuyumayan peoples are not only preserving their culture, but also innovating new ways to continue their way of life to the next generation. Sebastian Gaskin can’t wait to come back for amiyan (new year festival)! Kasavakan Deer Youth Hub #jademusicfest #JMFinAsia

Today, we took a lesson on archaeology and prehistory of Taitung, and also learned how to weave the iconic flower wreaths of the Pinuyamayan peoples. Sebastian Gaskin felt a sense of wonder, walking through the Beinan Site Park where over four thousand years of history is still being carefully excavated and studied. The people that came before us are not so far away when we start to understand their way of life through the things they left behind. We met Sunay Paelabang, a master weaver and preserver of the Pinuyumayan weaving traditions (tenun) and National Living Treasure. She passes on this knowledge with written records and adapted looms. We sat with the Pinaski tribe and learned how to weave a flower wreath for our dearest friends and family. Each flower wreath is earned, and also represents the joy of meeting new friends. Through this craft, Sebastian Gaskin felt a deeper connection with the community, who welcomed us with open arms, song, and dance. Culture continues to evolve as we live within it. Thank you for sharing yours with us!

Semangalan！ Today, we visited two schools where we learned from student athletes about the issues that Indigenous youth face, and sat in on a Pinuyamayan language class with elementary school students. Sebastian Gaskin shared his music and story, while they shared their song and dance. We also met with 林清美Akawyan Pakawyan, a knowledge keeper pivotal to the Pinuyumayan language reclamation movement. She rewrites old songs and lullabies and teaches the children to pass on the mother tongue to future generations. For Sebastian, who is relearning his mother tongue, it was invigorating to receive encouragement from an elder 12,000 km away from home. Semangalan! Let's do our best to sing in our mother tongues! +++ 感謝 Thank you 臺東體中 National Taitung University Affiliated Physical Education Senior High School 南王puyuma花環實驗小學 Nanwang Puyuma Wreath Experimental Elementary School 林水草 Straw Lim . . . . #jademusicfest #jmfinasia #indigenousculture #culturalexchange

This past Thursday, I was honoured to receive the Excellence In Sound Production award at the @womeninmusiccanada Honours. Sending love to my fellow nominees @rayannahmusic @thekayladiamond @writtenby.sumbxtch and @ocevnsideclvb … they are making incredible records and it was an honour to stand alongside them. Also want to shout out @fearlesscreativeinc @nac.cna @canmuspub and WIM Canada for their advocacy, community work and commitment to gender equality. They are a big part of the equation of why there has been a seismic shift towards parity for women in production and engineering in Canada in recent years. I have always said if the space does not exist, we must create it. I am so incredibly proud to be a part of this vibrant and trailblazing community of folks who continuously create spaces and amplify the work of the incredible visionaries in our community. Love to all the nominees and honourees this year. 🫶🏼💜 📸 @andrearamolo and Carla Antonio
