It’s been a minute since I have posted here (@amberwinick here, 👋 hiii!). Mostly I needed a bit of time away. (Thank you @michellemillarfisher for holding down the fort around here). I interrupt my hiatus today because not one but two DM players have words in @docomomous and their special edition on play.

Don’t miss reading an interview with the great @langealexandra (who wrote the forward to our book) and my own special essay on a place where I played as a child: Naked Lady Park in Miami, Florida. This essay was one I have longed to write for years and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to pay homage to a place so dear to me. Plus, who wouldn’t love the chance to advocate for child-friendly cities, celebrating my childhood use of the word “tits”, and naked ladies as playthings? Enjoy.

Babies in the museum! This photo is so special to me because it’s an image that would have probably scared the crap out of me in my 20s and even early 30s. Babies + Art = ???

To be able to pursue art, the calling of my life and raise a family at the same time is something I wasn’t sure was possible. Enter Designing Motherhood- I discovered this project sometime around the time I had my first baby.

Prior to my giving birth, I was making art and doing a lot of research around neuroscience and AI (topics that I have slowly since resumed contemplating in new light). But at the time of my pregnancy, I became secretly subsumed with learning about the things that were happening to my body— pregnancy, birth, lactation, caring for a tiny creature that conjured an ocean of hormones through my veins.

I say secretly because I was embarrassed by it all— I think I had internalized some sexist belief that “legitimate” research was separate from the intimate experiences of being a mother. Designing Motherhood saved me in this way— the intense care and brilliance through which they have researched the material and social conditions through which we experience the arc of reproduction has been for me, a lifeboat in a sea of self doubt.

The DM team has done so much beyond this — but for me, I just want to personally thank them for the ways they have championed artist parents; giving us incredible venues to voice our experiences and give forum to discuss these matters in both intellectual and heartfelt ways.

It is especially meaningful for this exhibit to have landed in New York, in the Museum of Arts and Design, a place that I came to frequently as a design student and aspiring artist. What a dream to show here, in my home town and to be able to share it with my little family.

Thank you to the curatorial team @designingmotherhood @michellemillarfisher @amberwinick @julianabarton @zoee_greggs @sweetwatertaffy @efkoehn @alixschwartz and all the incredible artists and designers in all the shows that I am lucky to call my community <3<3<3

Onwards!
