POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I first met forced assimilation at the age of 6, when a white british school forbade me to speak my native tongue in order to continue attending school. Following this abrupt interaction that stunted intimacy with my identity, I unwillingly learnt at a young age the necessity to fight.

Assyrians, Chaldeans, Arameans and Indigenous kin, are still coerced and forced into cultural suppression at the hands of coloniality and orientalism.

Indigenous languages have a unique vocabulary that's interwoven with the spirituality of cultural animism and ancestral Lands. Linguistic diversity remains under threat as we are on average losing 1 language a week. In 2005, linguists concluded that 60-90% of the world's 7000 languages will be at risk of extinction in the next 100 years.

So.....I was deeply humbled that a dear friend Dicky Bahto @dicky_bahto invited me and other Assyrian artists to share our words and imagery in his feature film 'A note on the ruins for visitors.'

Dicky writes, "I realized that the genocide hadn’t ended, and I needed to think about my relationship not only to the past of our community, but also to the present and to a future in which I decided I no longer wanted to take a passive role." The film investigates the materiality of cultural memory alongside its personal and spiritual dimensions, embodying the rebuilding of a community and connection to culture that honors the past while insisting on an open future.

This excerpt is from 'A note on the ruins for visitors' (2026) by Dicky Bahto. 69 minutes, Super 8 to HD, color & b/w, sound. In this excerpt you also see Esther Elia @malikta.esther painting the "blood and stone" prayer/poem in suret onto a prayer bowl.

From Beth Nahrain to Palestine Fundraiser Print❤️‍🔥

This print features a one-line poem I wrote in 2024, frustrated about the perception of the ‘Middle East’ as a fundamentally violent and ‘war-torn’ region when the current instability is a result of Western invasion and colonial forces. I leave the rest of the poem for you to interpret.

It’s been a long time since I’ve organised any fundraisers. All proceeds from the sale of these prints will be split between the Al-Nahal family @sonofgaza11 whose campaigns I manage and the Palestinian Assyrian Friendship Committee @pafcommittee in Gaza.

This A4 print ($30) will be available in person to purchase at my next two markets stalls. It is also now on my online store with worldwide shipping.

Featuring ‘Beth Nahrain’ in Assyrian and ‘Palestine’ in Arabic

I'm excited to share a collection of texts to accompany my recently completed feature-length film 'A note on the ruins for visitors', as a way of speaking alongside the themes and ideas that are in the film: how, through art, Assyrians preserve cultural memories that are ancient or recent, shared or personal, and furthermore through our art we are able to rebuild connections not only to our past but also to each other, connections that genocide sought to erase permanently.

The film was shaped not only by my own thoughts and experiences, but also by many conversations both in person and on-line with Assyrian friends around the world, and so this reader brings together essays, personal statements, Instagram posts, visual art, photographic documentation, and poetry made in places currently called the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Lebanon, and Iraq. Many thanks to everyone for allowing me to include your words and images in this collection. May it inspire you, as Isla Hanna puts it, “to serve the living as much as the dead.”

EXTREMELY URGENT MESSAGE FROM LEBANON

@lemkininstitute you are responsible to move from the language of warnings to accountable action whose main purpose is to stop this.

A doctor’s testimony from yesterday translated by @houssein_almahdi :
“What we witnessed was beyond anything we could have imagined. Never before has the morgue overflowed like this, we were forced to open an additional refrigerator to receive the bodies of the victims and what remained of them.”

Help @healthworkersandallies4pal now in their fight for Palestinian and collective liberation as they continue to be censored and repressed by the colonial state. (Fundraising link in @healthworkersandallies4pal bio)

https://chuffed.org/project/167372-ha4p-legal-fees-equipment

To counter propagandist governance, we must continue to center cross-cultural representations beyond our limited experience.
Within this space we aim to recognise the varied experiences of the oppressed as we conceptualize the collective struggle and piece together fragmented histories in our decolonial efforts.

Resistance takes many forms. Free Palestine and may Palestine free the collective conscience.
