💠The Church of the Holy Apostles, Constantinople- The Imperial Cemetery- An Overview and Quick History
*
⚰Have you ever wondered where Byzantine emperors were buried in? For those who don't know- as many might already do- this is the Church of the Holy Apostles. It was established when Constantinople was founded in 330 by Emperor Constantine I the Great, and following his death in 337 he was buried here too. It was also intended to house the relics of all 12 apostles, but it only had up to 3. The more famous version of this church was built by Emperor Justinian I the Great in the 6th century and this new form was a more impressive one being a cross in shape with 5 domes, one at the center and 4 at the wings. Although known for being the burial site of the emperors, it was also the second most important church in Constantinople second only to the Hagia Sophia.

🏚The Holy Apostles held the tombs of Byzantine emperors and their families until 1056 as following that, the church had no more space to house more sarcophagi. In 1204, it was looted by the army of the 4th Crusade and following that the church just decayed that by the 15th century it had fallen apart. In 1462, the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II after his conquest of Constantinople demolished the church and built over it the Fatih Mosque which is what it is today. However, 6 porphyry tombs of Byzantine emperors that were once here survive and are found at the Hagia Eirene and the Archaeological Museum. On the other hand, since we do not know exactly what the Byzantine era Holy Apostles looked like, 3 churches one being San Marco in Venice and the others in Padua, Italy and Perigeux, France which were inspired by it can give us a more or less clear image of what the 6th century version of the Holy Apostles looked like.
