I almost didn’t get this because it was a little pricey, but I’m so glad I did. He makes me so happy. I wanted everything in this gallery. @amerifolk

The women of Upstate South Carolina made their blankets from whatever was at hand long before anyone bought one at a store. Scraps left over from making a family’s clothing, worn out feed sacks, the padding inside an old quilt that had seen better days. The tradition that grew around this necessity became one of the most distinctly Appalachian cultural practices in the region, quilting bees held in homes and church fellowship halls where five or six women would gather around a frame, finish a quilt in a single day, and fill the room with the kind of conversation and storytelling that had no other regular venue in isolated rural communities. The craft itself came to the Upstate with the Scots-Irish, English, and German settlers of the 18th century, each group bringing different piecing traditions that blended over generations into something distinctly regional. The patterns that emerged, log cabin, double wedding ring, nine patch, star of Bethlehem, became a visual language specific to mountain and piedmont communities, passed from grandmother to daughter to granddaughter through demonstration rather than written instruction, which is why so many of the most distinctive regional variations exist nowhere else. The tradition nearly disappeared in the early 20th century as factory textiles made handmade quilts economically unnecessary, but it survived in enough communities to experience a genuine revival. Today the Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail documents painted quilt blocks mounted on barns and buildings across Anderson, Oconee, Pickens, and Greenville counties, each one representing a specific pattern with its own history and family connection. The Upcountry History Museum on Buncombe Street in Greenville holds examples of historic Upstate quilts in its permanent collection. What started as a way to keep a family warm through a Piedmont winter is now recognized as one of the most significant folk art traditions the region ever produced.
