Pepsi wächst im kargen Dalmatien bei verschiedenen Verwandten auf, bis sie ihre Eltern, die als #Gastarbeiter in Deutschland leben, nachholen. Doch der Alltag im hessischen Dorf ist bitter: Dem Hunger und Nicht-Dazugehören der Kindheit stehen die ärmlichen Verhältnisse, Zwänge ihrer Kultur und die kaputten Eltern gegenüber. Eine große Neugier auf Sprache/Literatur, die leuchtenden Lichter der nahen Großstadt und die feinsinnige Wahrnehmung der Natur sind Pepsis Lichtblicke.

Pepsi ist ein schüchternes, verträumtes, gutmütiges Kind, mit einer sprudelnden Begeisterung für Sprache und die Welt, welche sie vor ihren Eltern aus Angst vor Bestrafung verbergen muss. Ihre Einsamkeit ist den gesamten Roman über spürbar. Ihre vertraute Schwester Herzmandel redet kaum, richtet ihre Sinne ebenfalls nach innen, neigt aber angesichts der gewalttätigen Mutter und dem alkoholabhängigen Vater zu Apathie.

Der Roman ist in vielen intensiven, sehr bildhaften Sätzen in raffinierter, prosaischer Sprache geschrieben. Got to illustrate E. Edward Horne’s gorgeous poem about knitting and fatherhood for the latest issue of @taprootmag! Taproot gave me my first big break into editorial illustration back in 2016 and I’ll always be grateful.
