Three cheers for Leydn McEvoy ’26E who has been awarded an English Teaching Assistant grant to South Korea with the @the_fulbright_program! This Fulbright role will bring it all together for Leydn, whose senior thesis in the English department is a poetry collection bearing witness to Korea’s complex history. Leydn’s notable poetic and creative writing talent has been recognized with a Five College Prose and Poetry Prize and their selection as a participant in the UMass MFA Juniper Writing Program.

As an ETA, Leydn will also bring experience as a teaching assistant who led a summer fiction workshop for elementary school students in NY where they combined language learning with movement.
Leydn’s Korean-American heritage has pushed them to improve their Korean language skills and enhanced their appreciation for Asian art and artists. Last summer, they worked at a Korean art gallery, prompting ideas for incorporating works by both American and Korean artists in the classroom - a beautiful focal point for cultural exchange. “By connecting American and Korean examples,” Leydn says, “I aim to present the U.S. as a landscape of plural narratives and evolving identities.”

Leydn has already visited over a hundred museums and galleries across the U.S., and hopes to visit as many again in South Korea. Eventually, they plan to pursue an MFA in writing, but not before gaining even more experience at art institutions. Their aim, Leydn says, is “to extend my practice of treating art as a living, ongoing conversation.”

You’re well on your way, Leydn, and we are truly #AmherstProud of you!

Congratulations to Madison Suh ‘26 who has been awarded an English Teaching Assistant grant to South Korea with @the_fulbright_program! A native of Hawai’i with Japanese and Korean heritage, Madi majors in Asian Languages & Civilizations and mathematics at Amherst. She was thrilled to explore Japanese culture through a semester studying abroad in Kyoto at Doshisha University, and looks forward now to deepening her understanding of Korean culture as a Fulbrighter.

To make the classroom lively, Madi will draw on her many previous teaching-related roles, starting with her work as a tutor and sailing instructor back in high school. As a chemistry TA in college, Madi explained complex molecular interactions to her peers using games and sports analogies. As a leader in an off-campus poetry club, she organized middle schoolers into pairs to help them develop poetic rhythm and musicality. A poet herself, Madi plans to offer creative writing workshops to Korean students who want to delve into using the English language imaginatively.

Upon returning to the U.S., Madi intends to go to medical school and practice medicine in Hawai’i. She is eager to promote the practice of narrative medicine by integrating patients' stories into clinical practice, moving beyond mere symptoms to understanding the experience of illness. Madi says, “Teaching English in South Korea will further develop my skills in cross-cultural communication, resilience, and humanism – qualities that define the physician I aspire to be.”

You’re on your way, Madi! We are so #AmherstProud of you!

An inside look at The Indicator (@amherstindicator): This is Amherst College’s student-run literary and arts magazine! Originally founded in 1848, with the mission “to indicate the literary taste, spirit, and acquirements of the undergraduates of Amherst College,” The Indicator was resurrected in 1996 after a 145-year hiatus. While its form and style have shifted over the decades, The Indicator currently publishes one themed edition per semester and accepts a range of creative works including art, short stories, poetry and more.

Unlike most literary magazines, The Indicator does not operate on an external submissions-based model, instead emphasizing a close working relationship between club members in their roles as writers, editors and artists. For this reason, we encourage interested students to join early in the semester. Please send any questions or comments to theindicator@amherst.edu.
