Route 66 isn’t a road. Not anymore. It’s an idea, an international symbol of Americana. A concept built on decades of work by historic preservationists and promoters, started by a first-generation Mexican-American man in a very small town. On its 100th anniversary, I drove the longest remaining continuous stretch of Route 66 in western Arizona in the new Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, not just to see it or say I did it, but to determine whether 66 has a future once the fanfare fades. The Dust Bowl generation is all but gone. The Boomers who went on family road trips down Route 66 in the ‘50s are beginning to leave us. The first Cars movies was 20 years ago. Once the centennial is over, what will sustain 66 and all the small towns that owe their survival to the tourists who drive it? To truly understand Route 66, though, we have to accept its past. Dust Bowl migrants and nuclear family road trippers may spring to mind, but the story is far more complicated and far less pleasant for the Native American tribes along the route and for black motorists who drove the same road in a very different world. This is a story I’ve wanted to tell for a very long time. Not just another Route 66 road trip, but an inclusive, honest, and frank discussion of its past and future. I thought it had gotten away from me, but at the last second, it came back and despite covering only a portion of the road, I was finally able to answer the question that’s vexed me for years: does Route 66 have a future? Quick trip to California this weekend for Wiley and Ashlyn’s wedding! It was a really pretty wedding at @montagelaguna and we got to catch up with friends there, too. Congratulations @wileyraystevens and @ashlynstevens__ ♥️ We spent the day at Newport Beach when we got there Friday, went last minute shopping for Nick most of Saturday because I led him astray on dress code initially (hence the reason you see a picture of him forcing my suitcase closed because of his extra stuff), and Sunday we brunched and beached in Laguna Beach with Rick, Nick, and Sarah! A good way to cap off our month of travel in May 🌊🏝️

Going through some old photos and came across these shots of @mobiletechlucky and @alextaylorracing filming for a now defunct show at Irwindale Dragstrip. As a fan of that show It was awesome to see behind the lens and watch everyone do their thing. Still stoked that my buddy @amirsaidi gave me a heads up that it was going down.- thanks again! - I don’t think this ever made it on air. Thats a shame.

Welp - This being your last day and all - maybe we should just go pet that dawg now. (That’s for my HRG crew - they’ll get it 😉) New video of BTS from the last day EVER of shooting HRG is up on the Riding with Alex Taylor YouTube now. That is OFFICIALLY a wrap on Hot Rod Garage filming. A bitter sweet day - but at least it was a fun one! We wrapped up the last day shooting the @peakauto 63 Bel Air wagon that we swapped a Roadster Shop chassis, Blue Print SBC, GearStar Transmission, and Holley Sniper in. The goal was to make it their roadside rescue vehicle for other vehicles on events like Power Tour and to not be the one needing to be rescued on the side of the road. So we did a 200+ mile drive through the desert to shake it down. A road trip with the crew was a great way to end this era. Thanks to the best dang crew you ever did see - you all rock 🫡 As always - photos by @megan___taylor. She came out for the last day to capture it 👊🏼

Pictures from @hotrodgarageshow last week! We packed a lot into 7 days! 3 episode payoff, and 4 days of work on the @peakauto wagon. 😤 Wrapped Thursday afternoon, took a red eye home, packed for Drag Week Friday, and on the road to Ohio today to be ready for tech tomorrow 🤪 - Burn Pit at Irwindale with the 56 Corvette we put an LS 3, 5 speed, and @quick_performance 9 inch in - Long Beach Hi Performance Swap Meet with our 60 El Camino that we put a BDS 10-71 blower on (and yes… it needs a whole lot of upgrades other than that)… but that’s why we went swap meeting! Selling some parts to add to our cash fund for upgrades! 💵 - D100 auto cross redemption! We had not so great luck the first time we took it out. So we brought it back. Put a Gen III Hemi in it, 5 Speed, Quick 9 Inch with new leaf springs, and @qa1motorsports suspension. All was going good until, well… the shifter might have accidentally became a handle and got yanked out. Literally. And since Lucky was driving when it happened I have to say it… @mobiletechlucky broke it 😉😂 - Pulled the old engine, transmission, frame out from under the Peak 63 Bel-Air Wagon and got a brand new Roadster Shop chassis, BluePrint 383 SBC, and @gearstarpro transmission ready to go in. We did a LOT of cutting, welding, and figuring. This is going to be nice 🤤 And for those asking! Yes - @hotrodgarageshow will be coming out with 13 new episodes really soon! I’ll keep you updated on when that is once we have the date.
