This week has been all about the bees 🐝

It began when our youngest wondered where all the bees had gone that had been buzzing around our garden. Which led us to a honey farm to find out more. The learning and fun continued at home thanks to our @twinklresources subscription.

I have to give a shout out to our wonderful tour guide at @quincehoneyfarm So knowledgeable and patient with the children, happy to answer all of their questions and there were a lot!

We went out of season and on a fairly wet day and were pleasantly surprised with how much there was to see and do despite it. What this family run farm has to offer is really special.

We'll bee back 🐝 couldn't resist 🙈

A truly weird and exciting series of short videos I’ve been working on for @marinersmirrorpod , the world’s no.1 podcast dedicated to all of maritime and naval history, from the Society for Nautical Research. I’ve been editing the podcast, presented by @drsamwillis , for a couple of years now, and have made all kinds of video content for them - but these just might be my favourite things that they’ve asked me to do. For over a century historians have presented the very driest factual explanations of the strange and beautiful illustrations of the microscopic samples recovered by the Challenger expedition in the 1870s from the depths of the oceans. So the brief I was given was that I should make videos presenting these illustrations that would ‘let them be amazing and wonderful’, and allow people to see them as though through a kaleidoscope, so as to prise out the beauty and wonder from the science. I really loved making these. Go to @marinersmirrorpod to see the full videos, and loads of other cool and interesting biz besides.

And just like that, we are up at Northwest Corner making use of the hard ground to complete some much needed tasks! At Grantland we have a variety of different woodland spaces including Northwest corner, all of which need maintaining on a regular basis!

Over the next few days we will be completing these three important tasks to provide you with quality logs, oak timber and ash for the years to come, using our sustainable methods!

Thank you to @woodmizer for this amazing piece of machinery!

I never know exactly how I’m going to make a thing or exactly how it will look in the end. But I do trust that it WILL eventually look good enough. Every time I make any image in any way it looks objectively bad for a good while after I start - that’s just how it be.

This is my process making a map illustration for a historical fantasy novel, ‘The Children of Gods and Fighting Men’ by @shauna_lawless_author , published by @headofzeus

For a process that involves holding a very hot metal pen for hours on end, pyrography is surprisingly therapeutic! The woodsmoke curling up from this gorgeous bit of beech from @grantlandtimber was sweet and aromatic - the slow, careful demarcation of the artwork taking place necessarily outside, in the breeze and bird song, was a very welcome change from all the desk-bound artwork and editing I do. Grantland, I’m glad you’re pleased with your sign, I really enjoyed making it!

I wanted to follow on from the BOLD BUNNY BOOKMARKS and show you how they start out in my wonderful (but not so glamorous) workshop! This piece of Sycamore belonged to a round reception desk pulled out from Uffculme. I plane and sand one edge, then cut it down on the bandsaw and repeat the process to give me lots of strips. I then go back through and sand the bandsaw edge. I could plane that face but I need to make a raised bed for the thicknesser and I just haven’t done that 🙈

I love being able to give life to old pieces of wood. I could buy bookmark blanks and it would be far more cost effective (!) But, I have a workshop and I have wood, and I love making things from start to finish ❤🌿🥳

I wondered, would you like to see more of what goes into the things that I make? Does it add value to see how I select and machine the wood I use?

BOLD BUNNY BOOKMARKS!!!!! Or hares, or wabbits, or whatever you want to call them...!

These bookmarks were born through a love for the characters in childrens books and also wanting to inject some bold colour in contrast to the woods natural grain. They use up offcuts from my workshop to minimise any waste and are completely handmade from start to finish, by me 🥳

...and now I have a few extras to come along with me to Ashridge Wood Fair this Saturday 🌿

Day at @grantlandtimber pt1 here’s a snippet of the time I spent with Jerry and the guys this week, we milled this big walnut “stick” and got some beautiful boards from it, I can’t wait to turn one of them into a stunning piece of furniture in the very near future . 🪵🪑🪚🪓🔨
