What Classic Song is Buzzing in your head? 🎶🎵🤔🎧

Well, ours would be “Baby Girl” by NEL OLIVER @neloliveroff .

The Multilingual Musician recently linked up with legendary talent/artist manager @sunday.are “who suggested that you listen to the station that plays every song you know(ClassicFM973)”, and Happy Yourself 😁.

“Baby Girl” by Nel Oliver @neloliveroff was recorded at his Paris Studio in the Late 80’s. The song approaches love from the point of view of a father’s love and emotional attachment for his Baby Girl(Daughter) as he gives her hand on her wedding day. Nel switches nicely between English, French, Yoruba and Gun(gungbe). It would go on to be featured in Tunde Kelani’s @tkelani movie “Abeni”. 📜 @amlbyjosplay

Africa is home to some of the world’s oldest instruments.

But many of them are quietly disappearing through modernisation, urban migration, and the gradual loss of master craftsmen and oral tradition.

Here are 7 African instruments we can’t afford to lose.

When an instrument disappears, we lose more than sound. We lose language. Communal memory. Craftsmanship. Traces of our identity.

We hope these instruments survive the century, if only for the rich heritage they embody.

Before the music video became a marketing staple, before Nigerian artists thought about how they looked on screen, Harry Mosco was already pointing a camera 🎥 at himself. At his peak, one of the most celebrated musicians this country has produced, Mosco holds a distinction that history has been slow to credit him with: he was among the first Nigerian artists to use the music video as an artistic format.

His path to that moment began in the early 1970s as the bandleader, lead singer, and guitarist of The Funkees, the pioneering Afro-Rock 🎸 band whose sound drew as much from Hendrix as it did from highlife. The band’s career culminated in a landmark appearance at FESTAC 77 and a subsequent Nigerian tour, and then, quietly, it was over. In the aftermath of the breakup, Mosco signed to Tabansi Records, trading under the Taretone imprint, one of the most prolific and consequential indigenous labels in Nigerian music history 🇳🇬 .

His first two albums for the label - 1978’s For You Specially and Country Boy - were modest commercial performers. But their legacy lies elsewhere. On the Country Boy album, Mosco produced what is believed to be one of the earliest music videos by a Nigerian artist, for the title track.

To understand why this matters, it helps to remember what Nigerian media looked like in 1978. The Nigerian Television Authority had only just been established the previous year, consolidating a patchwork of state broadcasters into a national network. Content was scarce, airtime was rationed, and the idea of a musician commanding visual space, telling a story, constructing an image, and inhabiting a screen was largely without precedent. Radio and live performance were how music moved. Mosco’s video did something new: it brought the audience into direct, visual contact with the artist, on the artist’s own terms.

What Mosco built in that decade deserves more attention than it has received. The music video is now so embedded in how we consume and think about artists that its origins feel unremarkable. In Nigeria, those origins run through him.

The 1980s in Nigeria 🇳🇬 were the golden age of television variety shows. Typically hosted by a popular entertainer or music personality, these programs featured interviews with guests followed by live performances backed by a studio band 🎸. Some of the most notable shows from the era included The Art Alade Show, The Bobby Benson Show, The Stephen Osita Osadebe Show, The YomYem Show, Music Panorama, Princess Afi Usuah Show, Celebrities, and The Bar Beach Show.

Among the most popular was The Bala Miller Show, which ran throughout the 1980s and later enjoyed reruns on NTA in the 1990s 📺 . The program was hosted by Bala Miller, a respected music impresario who had first gained prominence in the 1970s as a bandleader. Earlier, he had been an important figure in the 1960s highlife scene as a trumpet player, performing with Victor Olaiya before joining the Universal Band - later known as the Sahara All-Stars Band, a major musical outfit in northern Nigeria. In 1977, Miller formed the group he would become most closely associated with: Bala Miller and the Music Pyramids of Africa.

When Miller secured his NTA variety show in 1985, the Music Pyramids of Africa served as the program’s studio band. The show hosted a wide range of performers, including Bongos Ikwue, Art Alade, Veno Marioghae - just before her breakout hit Nigeria Go Survive - Kris Okotie, and child star Yvonne Maha.

The variety show format has long been a reliable way to introduce new artists to national audiences, dating back to the 1950s. In the United States, traditional variety programs have largely evolved into late-night talk shows, where artists on the cusp of mainstream success perform for wider audiences. In the United Kingdom, music-centred programs such as Later… with Jools Holland continue to thrive, consistently showcasing compelling musicians. Today, however, this format is largely absent from Nigerian television - a gap in the media landscape whose revival would be widely welcomed.
