Instead of the ad or the AI video, I’ve been rewatching Amma Melton’s first college goal for Santa Clara. Then I searched Santa Clara on ESPN and got basketball, a Portuguese soccer club. ESPN is streaming their game on ESPN+. Their app just can’t find it.

When that ball came off her head - I blacked out there in the stands, just like I used to when I scored. Then I’ll admit, I teared up.

Pride isn’t the right word. I’m proud of her heart, not her talent. I think I’m just really happy for her. I’m really happy for my kid. No, happy isn’t right either.

WHAT’S THE WORD? It’s not pride. Pride takes credit. Happy isn’t big enough. What’s the word that means: my heart is exploding watching someone I love do what she loves, which also happens to be the thing that I loved, too? Feeling the sameness while acknowledging the differentness? Sharing this love with my kid, while also knowing this is hers and hers alone, and watching her do it entirely her way? I don’t know what the words are, the closest I’ve come is: REALLY FREAKING LUCKY.

Whether you score a million more goals or stop playing tomorrow- I love you, Amma.
