Each fall, I teach our introductory course, COM 107 Communications and Society, which lets me get to know more than 70 first-year students on a weekly basis. I’ve taught this class since I started at Newhouse as dean, and over the last six years, it’s given me a window into the student experience from day 1 through graduation. I love keeping in touch with my COM 107 students, and I’m always impressed by their drive. This summer, many of my students from last year’s class had experiences that showcased the skills they built in their Newhouse classes, taking part in everything from internships to Maymester programs. I wanted to share eight of their stories, and I hope it’ll inspire our first-year students to see how much there is to look forward to, even after just one year at Newhouse! Harry Tidgewell, Broadcast and Digital Journalism sophomore “I served as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. I called 45 games across two months, both in Newport and on the road. One of the most important things Newhouse taught me during my first year was how to tell a story. A baseball season is a story, with each game serving as its own chapter. Tying storylines together was essential to keeping fans engaged throughout the summer. The internship reinforced the idea that play-by-play is what I want to do. Having a demanding schedule over the summer was fun and exciting because I was doing something I loved.” Lily Nesbitt, Public Relations sophomore “I interned remotely at North Coast Communications, a digital public relations and communications agency in Washington, D.C. I worked on a variety of projects, including building press kits, creating media lists, conducting background research for clients and helping write LinkedIn posts. My PRL 216 class and two semesters at Hill Communications prepared me for this experience by giving me PR skills I was able to apply in a professional setting. By introducing me to the government side of public relations, this internship showed me how many different career paths are possible with a public relations major.”

After their visit to Hearst Tower, the Maymester students took a stroll down 7th Ave and visited the @StuartWeitzman office. Here they met @NewhouseSU alumni Sharon Kanter, Vice President of Global Marketing, and Kylie Gorsky, Communications Assistant. 👠👢🥿⁠ ⁠ As the students stepped into the Stuart Weitzman showroom, they got a behind the scenes look into their new collection, and Sharon walked them through how she tells the story for each piece and makes sure consumers find the shoe that fits them and their personality. She also discussed her career pivot into fashion marketing, breaking down how the skills she built as a journalist paved the way for her current success.⁠ ⁠ Kylie then talked about the art and business behind influencer marketing, emphasizing the importance of brand image and relatability. She shared how her Newhouse foundation has helped her thrive in her role and motivated students to stay hardworking and persistent as they launch their own careers.⁠ ⁠ Talk about an amazing end to week one of the Newhouse NYC Maymester program!

Week one of the Newhouse NYC Maymester ended on a total high note! Professor SimoneOliver took her class on not one but two site visits… To get started, the students had the opportunity to visit the @Cosmopolitan team at their HQ! Here's a recap of their time there:⁠ ⁠ The first stop on their tour was the fashion closet where they met Fashion Director Brandon Tan. He talked about the process of setting up a cover shoot and handling the incredible pieces that come through the fashion closet doors.⁠ ⁠ Stop two was the beauty closet, of course! There they met Beauty Editor-at-Large Julee Wilson who explained her product review and writing processes. @MissJulee also talked spoke the importance of diversity and representation in beauty and how she conveys that through her work.⁠ ⁠ Students also met Lucy Dolan-Zalaznick, Director of Social Media and Video. Lucy talked about the importance of social media in driving a magazine brand and the importance of having a team that values and encourages creativity. ⁠ ⁠ Last but certainly not least, students met Editor-in-Chief @WillaHBennett! Willa talked about her journey to becoming Editor-in-Chief for an iconic publication like @Cosmopolitan. She also gave advice on sharing your unique voice and putting your writing for the world to see!⁠ ⁠ Huge thank you to all of the incredible people we met @Cosmpolitan for an inspiring start to our day and for showing our students what it takes to shape the future of media!

At last night’s Mirror Awards in New York City, we honored NBC News award-winning journalist and “Dateline” anchor @lesterholtnbc with the Fred Dressler Leadership Award, and he ended his remarks sharing how students truly are the future of our industry. I’m glad we had some of our @newhousesu students in the audience to learn from his words of advice, and I was impressed by how our students so professionally worked the room and introduced themselves to the honorees and alumni in attendance. @nbcnews Business and Data Correspondent @bcheungtv ’15 interviewed Lester Holt and @cherylwills_ny1 ’89, Emmy Award-winning journalist and anchor for Spectrum News @ny1 served as master of ceremonies. I want to congratulate all the winners of the 2026 Mirror Awards, which recognize excellence in media industry reporting: Jesse Barron (The New York Times Magazine), Antonia Hitchens (The New Yorker), Pamela Alma Weymouth (The Nation Magazine), Oliver Darcy (Status), Josh Dzieza (The Verge) and Kayla Cobb and Adam Chitwood(TheWrap). And congratulations to The Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education for receiving the Lorraine Branham Award. Thank you to our judges who volunteered to read through dozens of entries and to alumna @rachelschang and Professor Joel Kaplan for managing all the details. I’m grateful to the Events and Communications teams for the expertise and care they bring to every Newhouse event.
