Congratulations to our alumnae Abbey Shoaf ('16) for her outstanding work at Colonial Williamsburg! A significant percentage of our majors also major in another discipline, thus enhancing their skills and knowledge. Contact us to find out how you can do the same.

See the story about Abbey here: https://cas.uncg.edu/uncg-alumna-turns-triple-major-into-career-colonial-williamsburg/

Some people choose between their interests.

Abbey Shoaf '16 combined hers.

Archaeology. History. Performance.

Today, she uses all three as a historic foodways journeyman at Colonial Williamsburg, proving that there isn't just one path to a meaningful career.

Read more about her journey from UNCG to Williamsburg at the link in our bio.

@uncg has returned to Mochlos! ⚱️🔍

After nearly a decade hiatus, @amsa.uncg students are back exploring the ancient island of Mochlos, Crete, which was once a bustling Minoan harbor (3000–1430 BCE) known for its metalwork, pottery, and purple dye trade with Egypt and the Levant.

Led by Dr. Georgious Doudalis (AMSA) and Dr. Jeffrey Soles (UNCG Emeritus), six students spent four weeks cataloguing ceramics from a purple dye workshop, training with international experts at the Institute for Aegean Prehistory, and exploring Minoan history hands-on.

They also soaked in Cretan culture, from archaeological sites to seaside towns, local festivals, and village life.

Happy #NationalInternDay! 🎉
We’re celebrating with a big update on Humanities at Work, our innovative paid internship program for @uncg humanities students!

For 2025–26, nearly 50 students have committed to a full year of real-world paid internship experience paired with meaningful academic coursework.

And they’ll be working with 12 amazing local internship sites!

Here’s to a new year of learning, growing, and making an impact. Best of luck to all our H@W interns, staff, and community partners!

Though it might not seem like much, these ruins used to belong to a great Minoan Palatial Structure. The archaeological site of Knossos on Crete lies about 30 minutes by bus from the city of Heraklion.

The site hosts horns of consecration and was said to be the site of the labyrinth which held the Minotaur. The settlement was said to branch off, with most of the village around the palace not being able to be uncovered (because people live there).

There are symbols of the double axe or “labrys” are carved into certain stones around the palace, marking the rule of Minos. Interesting fact though, the term “Minos” which is thought to be relating to King Minos actually is the term given to the leaders of Minoan Crete.

Also, the last picture is of the faience figurines found at Knossos. They were typically split for rituals or votive offerings, but these pieces became known as the Snake Goddesses. Did you know that some Greeks (according a lovely guide I overheard, so don’t credit me) believe that they are a mother- daughter duo?

Little personal bit: This site was one of the first I learned about when I decided to delve into Archaeology and seeing it in person was really gratifying.

NEW EPISODE, LINKS IN POST -

https://youtu.be/SvdZr5vM5s0

https://bullcitycoordinators.com/2025/03/11/sidequest-16-dr-robyn-le-blanc-and-ancient-coins/

Those of us who are casual fans of Antiquity spend a lot of time talking about our favorite emperors and kings, in addition to discussing specific battles of significance along with myths and legends. One thing we probably don’t spend enough time talking about is ancient currency and the various purposes coins were used for during Antiquity. To remedy that, Dr. Robyn Le Blanc hopped on the pod to discuss numismatics (the study of coins and other units of currency). Turns out that coins were used for a lot more than just purchasing things and paying the soldiers.

During this episode, we cover the renaming of Dr. Le Blanc’s academic department, sources other than coins themselves which shed light on these ancient artifacts, whether ancient coins belong in a museum (don’t take a drink every time I reference Indiana Jones), how coins were made and distributed and how important it was to sack cities so you could make the money necessary to pay your soldiers. And we also learn about an early Robin Hood figure who lived during the reign of Septimius Severus. How cool is that?

We also discuss one famous coin that sold for more than FOUR MILLION DOLLARS. This is serious stuff, folks!

Your reading assignments are Moneta and When Money Talks: A History of Coins and Numismatics.

The theme music is from Brent Arehart. Please call the pod (540-632-0160), leave a message and you’ll get in an episode. Let me know what you think about what we think in the comments.

And never forget that The Classical Antiquity Sidequest is a podcast without end.

In Trajan’s Forum, just a 4 minute walk from the Roman Forum, lies my favorite archaeological monument.

Pictured is the Column of Trajan (at night), with the bronze statue in the second image being the top.

The column itself is made of Carrara marble and engraved along the sides is the story of the Dacian War (at least according to Emperor Trajan). The Dacians were from modern-day Romania and they fought with Trajan’s army over their proximity to one of the provinces, Moesia, which ended up in losing to the Roman army twice.

The bronze statue itself depicts Emperor Trajan and the whole piece serves as a war monument. Trajan ruled from 98 CE to about 117 CE, with the wars lying in the middle of his reign.

Apologies, I promised pictures of Italy and I haven’t posted yet. Though I am staying in Firenze, Roma takes the cake first.

FEEL FREE TO FACT CHECK ME. (Brings more attention to the piece anyways)

In Dr. Robyn Le Blanc’s "Archaeology of Roman Daily Life" class, @uncgamsa students took a hands-on journey through history at the @uncgart foundry, casting ancient Roman coins using traditional methods. 🔨💰

By pouring melted metal into molds, they brought history to life and gained a deeper understanding of the daily practices and craftsmanship of the past.

A special thank you to Kevin Vanek, Foundry Director at @artuncg, for leading this immersive workshop and helping our students connect with the art of ancient craftsmanship.
