Can’t think of anything more cruel and disgusting than what happened to @doctormommymd. She had a miscarriage and her loss was used to promote misinformation about the Covid19 vaccine. We are making this post not only to condemn this kind of abuse, but also to hold space for and send support to @doctormommymd. We are deeply sorry for your loss, my friend.

“Yesterday I woke up to pictures on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter stating that I miscarried after having the COVID vaccine.

First. This is bullshit. If anyone actually went to my IG and scrolled through my posts they would see I miscarried 3 weeks before receiving the vaccine. I had my D&C 2 days after the vaccine but my sweet baby was gone long before that.

Second, how soulless and predatory of someone to take someone’s heartbreak and modify it to further their own agenda.

Misinformation is spread SO quickly because people don’t pause and think before hitting the share button.

Please, think before you share.

1️⃣ Is the information correct? Double and triple check. In this post about me, they changed the dates of my vaccine and my miscarriage to fit in with their agenda. If someone went to my page directly, they would have noticed this.
2️⃣ Think about the source - did you see it on Facespace or was it in a reputable medical journal. Did they tag the original author? (When people are trying to share suspicious information they won’t tag the original poster’s account)
3️⃣ Who is posting? What are their credentials? Are they commenting in their realm of expertise? Dr. can mean a lot of things…are they a DO or MD or are the a Doctor of Philosophy commenting on heart health?
4️⃣ Is it too good to be true? If so, it probably is. Celery juice isn’t going to cure all your ailments y’all.
5️⃣ Consider how what you are sharing effects other people.

Remember there is a human on the other side of the screen. Who has feelings. Who feels heartache.

Remember that when you share on social media, it can be reshared thousands of times within a matter of minutes. YOU can be the cause of a ripple effect of misinformation. Don’t be that person.”

Read. “𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 - Yesterday, I opened up Instagram and saw that @wearfigs had reposted a picture of mine! I was excited and happy at first only to realize later that they had photoshopped my picture (without asking). Can you spot the difference? They even removed the small freckles on my forehead!! While it may seem small, I just want to point out that no one should photoshop your body without your permission. For starters, that scar is from a mole that I had to get surgically removed because my dermatologist thought it might have been cancerous. After they removed it, a keloid scar appeared because my skin is susceptible to healing that way. I was self conscious about it and even had treatment to try and make it smaller. How do you think it felt when someone else validated my insecurity by photoshopping it away? We shouldn’t have to hide or be ashamed of any scar or imperfection on our bodies. Scars, marks, or just features we were born with all have a story and are what makes us unique- human. It’s what’s beautiful about our world. That we’re all different. I still have a hard time accepting all aspects of my body. I don’t need someone else telling me some aspects of my body aren’t okay. While it may have seemed great at first that I was “featured” on their account, I felt quite the opposite when I saw what was altered. Was I not good enough to be posted without being photoshopped? What message are we sending out especially to future health care providers? That everyone has to be picture perfect? Just a friendly reminder of how skewed social media can be. Be proud of your body and don’t be afraid to speak up (even if you live in figs scrubs all day).” - Rachel Young (@dentalrachel)

So folks, if you haven’t been listening to the news lately (no judgment- seriously-sometimes I have to tune out to preserve my sanity) Black folk are dying at an alarmingly rate from COVID-19.⁣
⁣
When it first hit, I know we thought we were immune. We 100% know this isn’t true. ⁣
⁣
This week in major cities all over the U.S., alarming and disproportionate COVID deaths have been documented in the African-American community. ⁣
⁣
Chicago- 70% of people who died from Covid 19 are black! This is huge because only 30% of the city is African-American. ⁣
⁣
Milwaukee-81% of deaths are black even though we are only 27% of the county’s population. ⁣
⁣
Charlotte is 33% black, but 44% of the Corona cases.⁣
⁣
<Insert screw face and the other range of emotions these stats provoke>⁣
⁣
So what is really going on here?⁣
⁣
Probably, a little bit of A LOT of things.⁣
⁣
We know that with any disaster, minority communities are disproportionately affected.#facts ⁣
Most of the time it is because there are many pre-existing disparities that affect our communities.⁣
THINK:⁣
👉🏾Access to health care services ⁣
👉🏾Access to QUALITY care ⁣
👉🏾Jobs that are less likely to work from home⁣
👉🏾Inter-generational housing or multiple families living together ⁣
👉🏾Higher incidence of underlying health conditions like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease. ⁣
👉🏾Institutional racism in the medical system leading to less intervention and earlier discharges ⁣
👉🏾Historic mistrust of the medical system⁣
⁣
This disease is showing how inequality and the effects of racism have major impact on our lives... people are literally dying⁣
⁣
More data are needed as ethnicity isn’t routinely being documented. I would expect these numbers to grow. 😔⁣
⁣
Advocacy is critical now. Hold our lawmakers accountable for expanding the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid to help cover people during this time.⁣
⁣
Register to VOTE (yes, voting affects your health) ⁣
⁣
Stay at home! Esp. if you or family is older or has a chronic disease. ⁣
⁣
If you think your discharge is premature or you need admission speak to hospital administrators and have your concern documented.
How are you staying safe? #amplifymelanatedvoices
