THE GILDED LILY

The Gilded Lily tells the story of four women across time, bound together by the preservation of a single piece of hair jewellery. A medieval witch, a Rococco mademoiselle, a Victorian performer, and a girl brought up in the digital age. As their shared heirloom travels through generations, it becomes a symbol of carried memory and ritual, resurrecting the legacies of the women who came before.

Through the persistence of this heirloom femininity is viewed as accumulation, a concept moulded by women and our surroundings. Historical dress, folklore, craftsmanship, and contemporary culture interact to transform femininity, presented as a contemporary form of adornment.

Crafted from antique lace, repurposed garments, vintage trims, and reclaimed textiles, each garment featured in The Gilded Lily is embedded with traces of its previous life. These collected materials are an homage to female identity - informed by our predecessors, we can attempt to dismantle the codes which oppressed those who came before.

The Gilded Lily refers to an act of ornamentation, an attempt to beautify something that was already beautiful to begin with. Just as these women were inspired by one another, this collection is a reminder of our female lineage and its innate power in which we can seek agency through. The Gilded Lily is a celebration of memory, craft, and the women whose legacies continue to empower myself and many others.
