POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It's been two years since I wrote this feature. I had almost forgotten about it until a recent conversation about my project *Life in GQPubliKKKa*, currently on view in Portugal, led me back to it.

Rereading it, I found myself thinking: a great deal has changed in two years. It may be time to revisit the subject.

One challenge is that there is now such an overwhelming volume of AI-generated imagery online that finding thoughtful work can feel like searching the ocean for a grain of salt.

So, a request:

Women artists — if you, or someone you know, are creating compelling AI-mediated photographic work, please send me a DM. I'm especially interested in projects that function as photographic series: bodies of work rooted in a sustained concept, developed over time, and using AI intentionally as part of the meaning of the work rather than simply as a tool for producing images.

As many of you know, I tend to approach photography from a fairly traditional art-school perspective. I'm not looking for work that is merely beautiful, shocking, or technically impressive. I'm interested in projects with something at stake—work that engages ideas, asks questions, and uses AI because it is essential to the concept.

If that sounds like your work, or someone else's you know, I'd love to see it.

With mostly monochromatic hues and an aesthetic that hints at time’s passage, Amy Selwyn’s images invite the viewer into a realm where light and shadow dance in a slow and expressive duet. Each photograph, though distinct in its subject — a cathedral’s vault, a fog-wrapped forest, a solitary bathtub, and a church standing sentinel in a hazy expanse — shares a common thread of contemplation and consideration.

@tanner_smiths –shabby chic meets gangster-inspired décor at this speakeasy in midtown Manhattan. It looks unassuming from the outside & is a favorite spot of mine to meet up w/ friends. They’re all-in on the steampunk /1920s aesthetic I love. Their cocktail (& mocktail!) list as well as their food is top-notch. I was here this week for the launch of @fringepress, @bookpipeline’s latest project.

🔥Presenting A World Of Mystery And Memory
👉🏻BY AMY SELWYN @amyselwynphotographer

🔥Just Published! April Issue #103

👉🏻"My primary interest these days is portraiture. That is, in redefining the portrait and expanding what is possible.
I am looking to present the past and the possible future in a single image."
-Amy Selwyn

👉🏻Amy Selwyn has been a storyteller her entire life. First as a writer and then, much later in her life, as a photographer, working with textual and visual languages.
She is drawn to the idea of small repairs, delicate interference with the photographic work, and using mixed media (sewing, found objects, archival photos, etc.) She aims to introduce a more profound meaning into the body of work. Most recently, she has been working with mercury glass (also known as silvered glass) to create a sense of both memory and past/present relationships. The work involves photographing reflections in mercury glass, printing that work, photographing the prints, reprinting, rephotographing the prints, and so on. Each layer represents a time period.

Selwyn works from a small home studio and does the printing herself. Selwyn, completing her second semester of a six-semester MFA at Maine Media Workshop, College in Rockport, ME, is especially interested in performance art combining her images of "cosmic debris" with non-linear, multigenerational storytelling. Selwyn is a graduate of Cornell University. She works with the Leica Q and Hasselblad 907X 50C (digital medium format) cameras.
