“I did that movie ‘L.A. Confidential’, and then I had a couple of opportunities around big-studio movies, and I was hell-bent on, ‘No, I don’t want to do those kinds of films. I wanted to do indies’,” says Simon Baker. “Maybe I look back naively and go, ‘Well, I probably should have done those’, gone for it with the studio thing and then I could have my pick of the indies . . . but I was sort of stubborn in that way.”

For the April issue of @esquire.australia 2025 issue, Baker reflected on the formative moments of his storied career, and how they’ve shaped him into the actor – and person – he’s become today.
