From witchcraft and alchemy to AI, tarot and astrology, anthropologist, folklorist and author Dr Amy Hale explores how magic and occult practice continue to shape contemporary art. Drawing on a global survey of artists, the book reveals how ancestral knowledge, altered states and magical practices offer enduring ways of understanding the complexity of human experience.

“When Emily Hunt performs with her marionettes, her eyelids are painted with another set of eyes, perhaps referencing an extra-visionary faculty that she employs when animating her creations. Originally from Australia and now based in Berlin, Hunt is a maker of enchanted object referencing magical visual languages and historical occult personalities, specifically women who have practiced magic. While she is a multimedia artist who draws and paints, her most magical medium is clay, from which she shapes rings, hands, portraits and the most astonishing marionettes, which are inspirited through automatic means and animated through performance.” – Amy Hale

A fantastic night at the Tate Modern for the launch of Amy Hale’s new book, Magic: Beyond the Supernatural in Contemporary Art. It is “a lavishly illustrated volume and a potent talisman, exploring the threads between magic and contemporary art across the globe.
From witchcraft and alchemy to Al, tarot and astrology, anthropologist, folklorist and author Dr Amy Hale explores how magic and occult practice continue to shape contemporary art. Drawing on a global survey of artists, the book reveals how ancestral knowledge, altered states and magical practices offer enduring ways of understanding the complexity of human experience.
Amy joined Jamie Sutcliffe in conversation to explore the book and the artists rewriting the rules of modern art history. For art lovers, students of the occult and anyone curious about the boundaries of human creativity” It was great to meet so many of the artists featured in the book and to see Amy again with Ruth Hogben, as we start work on an exciting project together for next year. I’m beyond thrilled to share that my work is a part of Magic: Beyond the Supernatural in Contemporary Art by the brilliant Dr. Amy Hale with @tatepublishing, a book exploring present expressions of the occult in art practices globally.

I’ve known Amy a number of years since a fortuitous meeting in London back in 2014 for I:MAGE the exhibition, lecture series and major occult event we were both a part of through @fulgerpress.

Hale says "Part of my goal with this book was to reassert magic not as fad or trend, but as a universal and creative response to the human condition.” 💯 I totally agree with Amy. My spiritual practice has informed my life since I was a young child and my art practice since the beginning.From early works like 'The Nightingale' when I used to film myself in states of trance in front of the camera for video; to performing in trance for my shamanic performances 'Healing The Museum' since 2012; all the way to today working "architecture as a type of spiritual technology" in my giant installations 'PoriPostModern' currently on @poriartmuseum ⚡⚡⚡
