Slide 2) Chapter 1 - Three Key Elements of Mutual Aid

ONE Mutual aid projects work to meet survival needs and build shared understanding about why people do not have what they need.

TWO Mutual aid projects mobilize people and build movements.

Howdy! 👋 Amy Huber, here and I’m trying to learn more about Mutual Aid. This is my attempt to help others learn too. I don’t currently know that much, except that of course I love when people get together to help each other. However, as an elder millennial, capitalism was definitely ingrained into me. So I want to learn more. Feel free to join!

Slide 1: Note Taking - Come and learn about mutual aid with me. - I am not an expert - I was gifted a booked, written by @spade.dean and named Mutual Aid. - I am going to read it and take notes. - Feel free to follow along. - Let’s see what we can discover. 💙 Amy

Slide 3: Notes by Amy H
Part 1) What is Mutual Aid?
“Mutual aid is a collective coordination to meet each other’s needs…usually from an awareness that the systems in place are not going to meet them… those systems…have often created the crisis.”
EXAMPLES:
- People raising 💰 for workers on strike.
- Ride sharing for boycotts and protests.
- Coordinating letter writing to prisoners.
- Putting out 💧 at border crossings.

Slide 2: Example of Mutual Aid, an illustration of cars and protest signs, “Setting Up a Rideshare system…for boycotts and protests.

Slide 3: Example of Mutual Aid, an illustration showing letter writing to prisoners, “coordinating letter-writing to prisoners.”

Slide 4: Example of Mutual Aid, “putting drinking water 💧in the desert 🏜️ for migrants crossing the border…”, an illustration of 4 water bottles in the desert 🏜️ and 4 silhouettes of persons walking across the desert.

Slide 5: Real Life Example of Mutual Aid, Building public benches at bus stops where there are none.”

Life Catch-Up in Photos (in no particular order)

1. Started a new part-time job teaching middle-schoolers the joys of graphic design. First project: making their own sketchbooks because every good designer needs a sketchbook.
2. 3. & 4. Explored the world of LA maker markets with a booth. Shared my craft with the purchases of six folks and met a collection of great and wonderful humans. Stop by @echogardenla for their Sunday Market. Adopt a kitty while you are at it.
5. Got to see @hamiltonboyce play several amazing shows throughout Southern California. Here he is at @thegoldfishla in some groovy lighting.
6. Enjoyed and reminisced about “Times I tried to to tell myself to hold on to these moments as they passed…” with the @countingcrows live at the YouTube Theater. Spotted this lovely sunset on the way in.
