I had held "The Ladybug Race" in my hands many times before, but only recently realised I had never really looked at it.

And perhaps "attention" is exactly the point of Amy Nielander’s silent book. A wonderful stream of life-size ladybirds crosses the pages until something happens — something small enough to be missed, but important enough to make us stop.

There is no strong narrative thread to follow. Instead, there is an invitation to look again, to return to what we thought we had already understood and notice that "something had escaped us".

By the end, the race almost asks to begin again. Because every detail can open another possibility, another interpretation, another story.

——
