Last time I wrote about my Sicilian brother-in-law, Tony. This time I write about blood. My brother Sam is such a talented editor. He tried to escape the biz, but much like Godfather Michael Corleone, just when he thought he was out, the biz pulled him back in. Hopefully, however, you think Sam’s edit of this @thefarmersdog film turned out a little better than The Godfather 3!

It was so much fun to make. Lil’ fact about me, back in the Summer of ‘92, I worked on the movie Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. It starred two dogs and a cat who get lost and have to find their way home through some treacherous wilderness. Each of the three animals had 8 to 10 backups “laying” by in their posh trailers. When one would need a break, another one would step in. These dogs and cats were unbelievably trainable. Always motivated by a tasty treat, of course, but man it was fascinating to watch them hit their marks having only been trained seconds earlier.

Working with the little gal in this spot took me back, but Kaja the Blue Heeler didn’t need no back-up. She never tired and hit her marks all day long. Maybe it was the Heeler in her—a smart, tenacious breed. The sweet thing even had time in between takes for an endearing little “BTS” interview.

Anyway, I’m super proud of by younger brother. He always followed me throughout my life, sniffin’ around what I was marking. Whatever I did, he would do. In fact, I think he scouted locations with me on Homeward Bound. After movies I finally wagged my way into Wieden + Kennedy. There came a point where there was an opportunity for him to follow in my footsteps there as well. But at the time, there was another job opportunity as an Editor’s Assistant, which I encouraged him to fetch. I thought it would be beneficial for Sam to have a unique craft that made him both desirable and valuable. If he was good at it, he could have job security for life! I guess I didn’t consider the burnout from the workload brought on by his success! Haha. Nothing a little time away couldn’t fix. Sam is back now and better than ever. Thanks to @brockkirby and @jeffdryer for entrusting him with their idea. @samselis would never go against the family.

Happy National Dog Day! As if my work dreams could get any freaking better, I got invited to help bring to life a bunch of testimonial ads for The Farmer’s Dog! You’d think making Nike ads with Tiger Woods was the mountain top. But when the call came to make a bunch of ads for healthy dog food, I realized there was higher to climb. I dare say that these will go down as the most endearing testimonials of all-time. If not, then they were certainly the most fun testimonials to ever make. Thank you @lanceopp for helming them. I can’t wait to say “I knew you when.” You were already well on your way so thank you for indulging us. The rest of the credits are too long to list, but @brockkirby and @jeffdryer are at the very top. You are the genius of a Riswold with softer, cozier coattails. I love you Nubs so much. @berriochoamy, my partner in pets and production, my goodness I’m so glad I convinced you to leave Marni way back in the day. You are everything I am not, and so much more. My brothers @samselis and @norlingpaul, you are Edward Scissorhands x 2. With an extra pair of scissors that can pour a perfect glass whiskey at the end of a crazy long day. Our music team @__gabriels__ , we don’t deserve you but thank you for playing along! And @therealjeffestow for working your business affairs magic and always keeping me out of court. Everyone @biscuit.filmworks, why are you so good to me? @shawnbullen, @hollydelavega @andrewtravelstead and @paulandjoe, thank you for the sweetheart deal. Gah! And then you throw me a bone named @brendangarrett_ , goodness gracious. Thank you, Brendan, for making it all happen. And thank you @michael_faller for making the picture so pretty. And speaking of pictures, @strange.victory what a pleasure and thrill to work by your side!!! Before I sign off, the biggest treat of all was the clients themselves. @srforman @amyschultzz @marsballpix @mdoff @jenniferdodds, what a joyful ride—window down, tongue out, loving every minute. Thank you for your trust and partnership. How can it get any better? I do know that @tigerwoods loves dogs.
