At the beginning of fifth year, I found myself wrestling with what seemed like a contradiction at the heart of self-discipline.

How do you learn to give everything you have, while also knowing what to hold back? How do you pursue excellence without being consumed by ambition, exercise restraint without becoming complacent, and demand more of yourself without losing sight of what matters beyond your achievements?

I wanted to understand what that balance could look like in my own life.

More than anything, I wanted to develop temperance.

Not through deprivation or simply denying myself the things I enjoyed, but through learning to govern myself. To be deliberate in what I pursued, measured in what I allowed to influence me, and steadfast in the standards I held myself to, regardless of whether anyone else noticed.

Fifth year offered no shortage of opportunities to put those intentions to the test.

Between the demands of clinical dentistry, the responsibilities of leading ADSA and the unpredictability of everything in between, I often found myself having to draw more from myself than I thought I had. I’ve come to believe that discipline is valuable for reasons far beyond what it allows us to achieve. Of course, it can make success more likely. But perhaps more importantly, it gives us something to be proud of regardless of the outcome: the knowledge that we conducted ourselves with integrity, gave our best where it mattered, and remained faithful to our principles even when it would have been easier not to.

There are many ways to pursue excellence in dentistry, and I have enormous admiration for those who dedicate themselves to mastering our profession. But I’ve always hoped to become someone whose pursuit of excellence extends beyond clinical ability, into the way I live, the way I treat others, and the contribution I make to the world around me.

I think there’s something particularly meaningful about trying to cultivate that kind of character not in isolation from life’s demands, bu
