In these highly globalized times, it is truly difficult to be surprised by something you haven’t seen many times before. The same applies to weddings; patterns, music choices, schedules, and situations often repeat themselves. That is why it was so refreshing to photograph this “anti-wedding”—an event that reminded us so much of our own, and where both we and our dear Atari (from afar) became just another couple of guests, photographing the scene from the inside more than ever. We experienced what it feels like to be part of the crowd: listening to friends talk about traveling from Japan—or anywhere in the world—to attend the wedding; hearing them speak proudly of witnessing the birth of that love firsthand; or reminiscing about the first movie you saw together at the cinema. It creates a setting where a brother who rarely sings in front of the family might feel inspired to play a few songs, giving everyone goosebumps. It was an intimate affair—just friends, authentic and simple. Love was the central focus. It was exactly what was needed to let the important things take precedence over the non-essential, and to let “Unchained Melody” play while no one could stop dancing. Thank you, Mónica & Ignacio.
