Today we introduce Anaya Engineer, an interdisciplinary artist who graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is currently working at Saffronart. With a multidisciplinary approach, Anaya explores the intersections of identity, memory, and materiality through her evolving practice. She is interested in capturing the “unseen” though art. She thrives to capture emotion using light, transparency, and a subdued palette and encourages her viewers to play a significant role in the process.

glimpses of ☼ Saturday Sun: Exploring Cyanotypes ☼ on the last day of summer co-led with @anayaengineer.art at @flowershopcollective 𖤓

this one was special as it marked the 10th workshop i’ve facilitated and taught. it was a full house! we learned the traditional cyanotype printing process—mixing chemicals, coating paper and fabric, and exposing prints to sunlight and UV light. we also explored color modification techniques and some bookmaking + binding to create our one-of-a-kind book 📖

As we shift into fall, join us on the last day of summer to explore the magic of cyanotypes. Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic and printmaking processes, using UV rays and two chemicals to create a rich, deep blue representation of photographs, objects, drawings, and more.

Saturday Sun will be co-led by @sam.hit.a and @anayaengineer.art, both artists from Bangalore, India, now based in New York.

In this hands-on, experimental workshop, you will:

🌞 Learn the traditional cyanotype printing process, including how to mix chemicals, coat paper and fabric with the cyanotype solution, and expose prints to sunlight to produce the signature blue hues of the medium.

🌞 Explore color modification techniques such as bleaching, toning, and collage using coffee, tea, and wine.

🌞 Print on materials such as white and brown paper, and muslin.

🌞 Learn the basics of bookmaking and binding to create a one-of-a-kind handmade book using your printed cyanotype materials, featuring a muslin cover and four pages.

🌞 Use provided objects and drawing materials to create your designs on transparent paper and acetate.

Note: All materials will be provided, but please bring special objects you’d like to print with (e.g., items with transparency, shape, or texture—such as leaves, flowers, plants, feathers, etc.)

Our last Capstone, but certainly not least, may also be the biggest. The students in ‘Material Lifespans’ taught by professor Danny Floyd designed a unique space and posters in addition to each of their own thesis works. This curated corner of the gallery showcases just how these artists are breaking boundaries.

The creative mind of @anayaengineer.art has created even more beauty than I could ever envisioned with my accessories. Her play with texture and light in fashion photography truly astounds me and inspires me to view my fashion work as fine art. This was one of the last shoots we did before I graduated, yet she still figures out a way a year later to build on this work. I had to take a second to show off her work with the lovely @avareimers as a model. More of her work to come:)
