Dead Zero (Chapter 1)
Dir. Andy Gray

Having recently premiered at the @horroronsea takeover of @southend_film_festival Dead Zero Chapter 1 is another in a long line of independent productions in the zombie sub-genre.

We follow Zero Squad, an elite military team, who infiltrate a research compound shrouded in mystery. As the squad uncovers the facility's dark secrets, they face a deadly enemy that blurs the line between science and horror.

There’s something to be said for character work in genre; if there’s no backstory or reason to care about the people in peril I’ll always will for the antagonist. In the case of Dead Zero, I didn’t feel anything but laddish humour from these squaddies so when the shit hits the fan, I wanted the horde to win.

The main draw here so far is the practical effects. Some of the make up shown on undead close ups showcase great prosthetics. The foley and sound design also stands out during fight scenes, and I loved the poster design with silhouettes of heavy artillery shown in an infected iris.

Fans of zombie features with fast paced action scenes will find something enjoyable lurking in Dead Zero. If chapter 1 is anything to go by, chapter 2 is promising to deliver some great indie horror moments.

Chapter 2 is anticipated for a release in 2027 and you can support the production by visiting their Go Fund Me below.

Some #BTS from the ‘FINAL FIGHT’ of @jackal_and_hide_shortfilm

I’m still so proud of this fight sequence that the team & I choreographed, directed and filmed together all without the assistance of a Stunt Coordinator.

Just goes to show what can be achieved when great minds, skill and passion join forces.

Well done to all involved, top performers!
