Newsday's @andiberlin says: I will always be a carne asada evangelist, but a trendy new style of tacos has had me questioning my allegiance to fiery charred beef on a flour tortilla. This style of steak taco has been taking over New York City this year, but it comes via Mexico City with a little northeastern Mexico mixed in.

The name has not yet been completely crystalized, but for now we're going to call these rib-eye tacos, or "slap" tacos, although residents of Mexico City apparently refer to them as "boujee tacos."

The meat is not chopped or charred like Sonoran carne asada, but presented in one long, thin slab of beautiful, juicy steak. This makes each bite delicate and suave, with less char and crunch but more focus on the quality of the meat and the earthy corn tortilla.

Read more about the three spots on Long Island who are making "slap tacos" at the link in our bio. 🌮

Our list of the 50 best restaurants on Long Island is out now!

And the list has never been more diverse, celebrating cuisines as far flung as Peruvian, Egyptian and Korean alongside our considered — and much-debated — picks for best Italian, Chinese, steakhouses and other competitive categories. Geographically, the restaurants extend from Great Neck to East Hampton — with stops in towns not generally regarded as hotbeds of culinary excellence. This year, more than 10 of the 50 restaurants are new to the list.

BUT there are the "legacy" restaurants that have made the list, nine establishments that have been around for at least 20 years with the same owners, same concept and same unwavering commitment to quality.

With a name like South & North Indian Cuisine Inc., you know exactly what you're getting when you walk into the humble room.

But that's not the whole story. The new restaurant also dives deep into Kerala, a tropical Indian state with a fascinating history and a love of coconut, which makes the food beguilingly creamy and fruity.

At Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, you’re paying top dollar to see legendary performers by the water, and there is absolutely no need to be distracted by hunger pangs. 🍴

Grab a bite before or after the show! Frankie’s Pizzeria is Long Island Italian food done right. The portions are ginormous, which is helpful for fueling up before or winding down after several music-filled hours at the beach. Plus, Frankie’s is just minutes from the Meadowbrook State Parkway connecting you to the venue. 🎤

Mexican street food is thriving on Long Island, and some of the region's best bites can be found in food trucks, taquerias and casual neighborhood spots.

Newsday food critic Andi Berlin highlights six must-try dishes, including this Cali-style Mexican hot dog from Mama Rosita in Bay Shore. Her article also includes a Sonoran-style bean burrito in Babylon, a bacon-wrapped Cali dog in Bay Shore, traditional carnitas tacos in Farmingville, a Puebla-style cemita in Hicksville and more.
