Two years ago, I walked away from a ten year marriage.
With no job, no money of my own, Covid in full swing, and with a 4 year old and a baby in tow, I ended up homeless and living in a shelter with my two kids. The only thing I had left to my name was my guitar.
A few months later, I saw a post saying they were accepting auditions for a local competition called ‘Vancouver Island Country Idol’, so I decided to try out, even though I hadn’t performed publicly in over ten years. I had nothing to lose.
I made it to the top 5.
I wish I could say I got up onstage and sang my heart out and killed it, but that didn’t happen. I didn’t come in first place. Or second place. Or even third place. BUT I got back up on a stage again, and for me that was a win.
After the show, I was completely drained. I was filled with self-doubt and I felt like I was crazy for attempting to pursue a music career again. So I did what any rational person would have done- I crawled into bed, and cried for three days while watching Netflix. I did a lot praying and I asked the universe for a sign.
I got it the next day.
While watching a documentary about Dolly Parton I saw a clip of her long-time producer, Steve Buckingham, and I decided to track this poor man down and email him asking him for advice lol 😂
To my complete surprise, he messaged back!
He told me that I should surround myself with people better than myself, and above all else, to work hard.
So, I got out of bed, and started working. Flash forward a year:
I won over $70,000 in music grants.
I started working with an incredible mentor and producer.
I was nominated in the second ballot for music video of the year at the BC Country Music Awards, and recently found out I am officially nominated for a Fan’s Choice Award (🤯)
This weekend, I got to go back and perform with Vancouver Island Country Idol again and I cannot express my gratitude for this amazing family.
What I’ve come to realize, is that in life, it’s not our moments of success, that define us.
It’s in our failures, in the moments where we fall flat on our asses, and we’re broken, bruised, and utterly defeated, that we truly find ourselves.
