There is so much power in what we tell ourselves about ourselves!

My yoga teacher recently declared he was a runner. He wasn’t when he made said declaration. But once he decided he was, he started running several times a week.

It’s nit about running per se. It’s about deciding who you are becoming and then moving in that direction.

What’s your next version of yourself? What can you declare to be so and then go make it happen?

This post shows the power of merging my activist background and spiritual practice to forge a lane for those often forgotten or ignored by mainstream yoga teachers and communities.Ā  For clarity and to be explicit, I am not saying that I (personally) am the future of yoga.Ā  My point is that different faces, sizes, backgrounds and experiences are neededĀ  - for all the reasons.
Ā
The predominant paradigm in modern yoga is young, female, lighter hued, able bodied and slender.Ā  I saw a Time magazine cover in 2023 entitled ā€œThe New Mindfulnessā€ and the only melanated anything I recall seeing in the magazine was a passing mention of Kendrick Lamar.Ā Ā  I vowed to disrupt the tacit or overt exclusion of practitioners and teachers of color as faces of the practice in mainstream media and at yoga institutions - to the best of my ability.Ā  Pretty ambitious for being relatively new to the scene…. But this was right after the pandemic and it was a whole new world then. And besides, you can take the guy out of organizing/activism, but you can’t take the organizing/activism out of the guy.

With gratitude to the good folks at @consciouslivingpr last month my profile was featured in @yogamagazineofficial - a bigger bodied, differently abled, socially conscious black man made the mainstream yoga press.Ā  And shout out to @yogamagazineofficial that accepted my editorial suggestions to change the images in the article to be aligned with my teachings and my audiences.Ā  Enjoy the article, and share so others can see what’s possible.

Since launching in April 2020, the trajectory of Active Peace has been nothing short of stratospheric. That’s what happens when @prince and @jimihendrix are your creative patron saints.

Gratitude to my teachers, students and anyone who has shared a kind word with me as I have tried to clear space within to hold magical spaces in the world.Ā  And to my fellow teachers and creatives out there - keep refining your craft, rooting in your practice and investing in your healing.Ā  Because the union of mastery, discipline and liberation yields transformation – for yourself and all who cross your path.
Ā
Asè.
