Join FAAM on Feb. 27 and 28, 2021 for “We Have Words for Art,” a virtual symposium to address the challenges of and share strategies for writing about Indigenous art of the Americas. This two-day event is FREE. Register and find more info, including a full list of presenters, at www.firstamericanartmagazine.com/words or by visiting the link in our bio! In recent histories, the visual arts have been one outlet for expression and survival open to Native peoples. Native art history is a relatively new field, however, and criticism, the engine that drives art history, has been minimal. Prevailing norms have been set by non-Native writers. “We Have Words for Art” recognizes that Indigenous people should lead the development of new protocols that honor cultural sensitivity, accuracy, and inclusion so that Indigenous communities become central to the Native art canon. As such, the title of the symposium is a play on the widespread myth that Indigenous languages lack a word for art or the vocabulary to discuss the art of their communities. The event will include individual presentations and group panel discussions that privilege Indigenous writers. Individual presentation topics include Indigenous art criticism methodology, Native arts scholarship in academia, writing exhibition text for museums, tribal affiliations in art writers, and writing about Native art for mainstream art audiences. Roundtable panelists will discuss striking a balance between writers and artists, criticism of Indigenous art, and simultaneously writing from art world insiders and the general public. Each day’s presentations will be followed by open forums in which audience members are free to ask any questions of panelists and volunteers. About the macaw: Designed by Neebinnaukzhik Southall (Rama Chippewa) of Neebin Studios, the macaw embodies the ability to speak in all languages and its speak glyph was inspired by Anishinaabe birchbark etchings. #firstamericanartmagazine #wehavewordsforart #indigenousartwriting #symposium
