POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I went with my friend, the Italian painter from Milan, @andrearizzo_o to see the Robert Ryman retrospective @barbicancentre this morning.

I commented to him at the time that this is not a particularly #instagramable show and I would be lucky to receive a handful of ‘likes’ so here’s hoping. After all, for many people, Ryman remains the artist who painted a white canvas white!

There were, of course, a great diversity of works with different supports, brushmarks and colour variations coupled with the constant nagging reminder of that famous Ryman quote ‘that the best way to experience a painting is in person’.

His paintings, which mostly use soft white paint and a square format, reward close looking. He wants you to notice everything and the magic is in the feelings that arise as you attune yourself to the paintings’ similarities and differences, how they relate to each other and interact with the surrounding light and space. I have to say the #brutalist concrete gallery spaces really did add an additional layer of visual interest.

Presenting over 60 works made from the mid-1950s to the early 2010s, this major new retrospective of the extraordinary American artist invites you to take a closer look. You may notice aspects of painting you haven’t seen before – and perhaps you’ll leave wondering what else in the world might become clearer if you simply slow down and tune in.

And the experience was also a timely reminder of @jason_martin_studios forthcoming exhibition which opens on Friday 6th November in which similarly formal issues concerning the nature of painting itself are expressed in an entirely different way.

Go on give it a like!

La magia del bianco e nero nell’interior design si esprime attraverso contrasti di luci e ombre, creando atmosfere di sofisticata armonia visiva ed estetica.
