A bribe is something you offer in the middle of a meltdown to make it stop. It usually sounds like, “If you stop crying, I will give you a cookie.” The problem with this is your child learns that if they have a tantrum, they can earn something extra. The same thing happens in schools. If they have an interfering behavior and someone offers a walk, they earn something extra for having a tantrum. Bribes are reactive- they happen after the behavior starts, and they actually make the behavior stronger over time. Reinforcement is completely different. It is planned ahead to encourage the behavior you want to see. It sounds like, “When you put your shoes on the first time, you earn 10 minutes extra on the IPad.” The difference is that the reward is connected to the positive behavior before it happens, so your child learns what to do to earn it. Reinforcement builds habits and teaches skills instead of rewarding chaos. Think of it this way: Bribes put out fires, reinforcement prevents them. Bribes keep you stuck in survival mode. Reinforcement sets clear expectations and motivates children in a way that teaches new behaviors that work in the long term. I’m Robyn, a Behavior Analyst, educator and mother of 3. Please join us July 25 in The Word Barn Meadow or consider donating to support Oscar. Visit the Word Barn website to see the options. On February 5, Oscar Grossman suffered a devastating fall while working at a job site through the SST school program. He sustained multiple serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, fractured neck, back, and skull, and is now undergoing intensive neurological and physical rehabilitation. Oscar’s life has been forever changed, but his strength and spirit are guiding us all. He is a true warrior. Our family is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our community. With a long road ahead, your continued support means everything. #TeamOscar ⸻
