A N D R E A 1965- Andrea Zittel

In 2000, artist @andreazittel established a home in the high desert of California near Joshua Tree. Andrea’s A-Z West House, where she lived until 2021, is a place in which spaces, objects, and acts of living all intertwine into a single ongoing investigation.

Andrea wrote “Like A-Z East, A-Z West became the site of many prototypes for living that would eventually migrate into gallery exhibitions. For instance, Linear Sequence, in my living room, is an abstracted furniture work that we use to sit at, drink tea and read books, watch movies, and hang out with my son and friends. Another prototype is the set of A-Z Aggregated Stacks in the dining area. These irregular modular shelving units are made from cardboard boxes fused together with plaster gauze. The A-Z Containers (bowls) are used in living quarters at A-Z West and have been in use since the early 1990s when I started using bowls for all eating and drinking functions – whether it be tea, muesli, salads, or stir-fry. The bowls work better than you might initially imagine – and we are always inventing new recipes for bowl meals.”

The A-Z West House is available for Self-Structured Residencies and Stays. Visit our website for more information!

A-Z West Sconces were first designed by @andreazittel for the Guest Cabin at A-Z West. They are based on an earlier cube-shaped wooden lamp design that Zittel made several variations of for both A-Z East in Brooklyn New York, (1994-2000) and the main house at A-Z West (2000-2021).

A-Z West Sconces are available on our website, in the Studio Store, or at our Hammer Museum Pop-Up. Sconces can be customized in other colors or sizes and can be fabricated as a desk or wall lamp.

From the HDTS Desert Destination Log:

Regenerating Field, A-Z West
written by Andrea Zittel

To the north of my house is a field of metal racks — this is the Regenerating Field, one of the first projects that we took on after moving to the A-Z West. When I moved out here my works were primarily made out of wood and steel, but I was interested trying to come up with new materials and fabrication techniques made more sense in the extreme desert climate. (For the first few years the studio was outdoors, and it was incredibly difficult to make pristine works out in the elements) In looking around for the most plentiful natural resource available, I realized that the one thing I had a lots and lots of was garbage - especially paper waste. Product packaging, shipping boxes, newspapers, magazines, mail order catalogs and junk mail all had to be hauled to the dump (this was before we had a trash truck that comes twice a month) and I started using this to developing Paper Pulp as a building material. Over the years we have had both successes and failures with the panels — sometimes the paper dries too slowly and rots, and other times it dries too quickly and warps. We are working to troubleshoot some of these issues. The Paper Pulp Panels are dried in a grid of racks called the “Regenerating Field”. People think that they look like solar panels or modernist sculpture like the work of Walter De Maria, but I often imagine that they are an agricultural field. I like the idea that I can “farm” my art - by setting out a batch of pulped paper each day, and then harvesting it several weeks later when it is dry.

@dwellmagazine is looking back at the major themes and moments that have shaped their stories since publishing their first issue in October 2000. We couldn’t help but spy Andrea Zittel stepping out of a “Yard Yacht” from the December 2002 issue, wearing one of her “Fiber Form Uniforms.”

You can dive into the Dwell archives and read the 2002 “Living A-to-Z” issue feature at the link in our bio.

See the Yard Yacht and more at A-Z West. Fall public tours begin this Saturday, October 5!
