By the time you are looking through the camera, most of the photograph is already decided.

Where you stand. What is behind them. Which side the light falls on. What you leave out of the frame.

Everything after that is small corrections.

Beginners spend their time on settings, because settings feel like the technical part. Settings are the easy part. Standing somewhere on purpose is the craft.

Everyone in that room saw what I saw. Same light, same person, same afternoon.

The difference was not my eye, and it was not the camera. I stayed on it about thirty seconds longer than felt comfortable.

That is most of what seeing is. Looking past the point where everyone else has moved on.

You can learn the technical half of photography in a weekend. The staying takes years, and it is the half you can see in the picture.

A camera taught me this before anything else did. Everyone is looking at the same scene. The whole job, the only job, is seeing what the others walked past.

How we choose to see things is the work.
Some people call that taste. It is really just attention.
